Screen is zoomed in way too far, this isn't 1998 so...

Higher/lower resolutions have no affect on how far you can see, only the shape of it matters.

Shorter, wider shapes allow you to see more, while taller thinner shapes allow you to see less.

Higher resolutions will increase the amount of detail though.

A game for ANTS?!

I find the camera being just fine. Even as a ranged character I find it balances well.

I've just joined the open beta, but for what it's worth I've noticed that enemies do close in on me pretty quickly. It definitely adds to a sense of urgency and a higher tempo to the game, as long as kiting classes still have a chance to survive and get out of tricky situations.

do you by chance happen to listen to the Jason Ellis Show?

No. It's a military expression, or at least that is where I came into contact with it.

GGG cannot easily pull back the camera, it's as far back as they can offer. Enlargening it:

-Gives ranged characters way too much range
-Allows players to exploit the AI of monsters (monster reaction range is just outside our view, if they increase the view, they have to alter how far away monsters can react)
-Forces the client to render more, forces the server to send more data to each client; this fucks with their client prediction stuff and chest spawning code

I personally don't care for the phrase "It's not year XXX anymore." Games aren't that old, in the scope of things. The fact they did things well in 1998 suggests it can be done well in 2012. Just because something is "old" doesn't make it a bad mechanic or design choice. If you want new and hip things in your video games, Call of Duty is over that way. Expecting games to be homogeneous is a bad expectation to have and results in the reason why games like POE are so rare.

If you use the wide screen exploit, you'll notice monsters don't get rendered well at a certain distance and that monsters won't react if you fire at them from the range where you're not supposed to be able to see them.

1)Its lame exuse, you can balance it out in different way, plus you pick ranged char for a reason too. Additionaly you already can kill everything off screen by just shooting blindly with mass aoe spells.

2)Its also lame exuse, AI can be changed, range of their detect can be increased. Additionaly they already detect you off the range so its also broken in current state.

3)As I know the client generates whole map in one go the moment you enter it, not while you walk in it. Rendering graphic is only client side. During battle you get from server mostly codes of enemy and allys movement, items drop etc. Additionaly even if the "send more data" would be correct, the server is already sending that data, otherwise enemies wouldnt attack you off screen.

BONUS 4) Having more view would actualy create better gameplay possiblity for monster AI, better reflex frame for players (monsters teleporting from nowhere to you is broken as fck for action game), better information about the battlefield for players overally. That would enchance gameplay much more.

I dont speak about some radiculus zoom out, but something around 15-20% more than now.

I'd be content with removing that 'barrel' visual distortion alone.
It serves nothing, it enchaces nothing, it looks and feels stupid.
Like some kind The Little Prince game adaptation not gore medieval action rpg.
Also it affects gamplay badly (AI range, pvp and so on).

Still it has been discussed for like 2 years now (that distortion thing) or such and nothing happend, what's more I've never heard any resoning behind using this shit.

I want PoE be flat :]
Happy with it as is. D3 and T2 look so dumb because of how far they're zoomed out.
my only problem(along with open beta being much more unstable and buggy than closed beta, guess there is first time for everything, lol) is the fact that enemies see further than I, that is just stupid, especially for skeletons that dont even have eyes...
