Some people don't want this to be an MMOARPG

-No, it isn't, and theres no "official" classification of such.
-By your logic, every single online game would be considered an MMO, and thats obviously ridiculous.
-As has been pointed out, education programs for MMOs would not classify PoE as an MMO.
-GGG has officially said they don't consider PoE an MMO. Probably because it isn't.

Then GGG should not advertise PoE on MMO websites as an MMO.

Are you sure GGG has done that themselves, or are you just referring to MMO sites covering the game?
Are you aware that MMO sites cover tuns of games that aren't MMOs to keep their traffic up so they can keep functioning?

I really don't understand what the deal is with young gamers thinking they can change decade plus old definitions of gaming terms. I've still never seen anyone calling PoE an MMO explain how their delusional definition doesn't classify every single online game as one as well.

Entirely instanced game = not MMO.

Actually it is...

only in the loosest terms possible, it's like saying CoD is an mmo, it's not, but since it's online and many people play it it is.

Path of Exile is not an MMO by definition, but it is true that the server architecture is clearly very badly designed and may resemble one used on MMO games.

Path of Exile is all hosted on the same server, or maybe using some kind of cluster.
However, after getting so many synchronization issues, it is clear that GGG did not think their entire networking scheme through and should remake it to rely more on the client where possible, instead of making the servers do everything.

A separate authentication daemon would be nice too if they didn't do that already.

After reading many of the complaints all over the forums, it seems most people who have a complaint would prefer this game as something else.

He is a list of common complaints with my perspectives/replies:

- Complaint: "This game is boring, all you do is spam the same skills over and over"

- My reply: It's an Action RPG, not a turn-based strategy game.

- Complaint: "There's no self-found league!"

- My reply: It's an MMO, not a single player game.

- Complaint: "desync ect ect"

- My reply: It's not LAN, it's an online game. (and yes, I know, improvements can be made, and as GGG has said they will be, but some people expect perfection in this department which is extremely unrealistic)

- Complaint: "Trading is hard/grievous"

- My reply: That's because haggling and bartering is part of an online economy. (and yes, there is a lot of bartering that goes on in-game)

- Complaint: "X build is OP"

- My reply: Every build has strengths and weaknesses, and any build, if done right, can be good. (Assuming it's not something like CI/BM)

I'm probably missing some common complaints, but yeah, this kinda sums it up.

Maybe people can understand someday this game is an MMOARPG and not anything else, and hopefully, is meant to stay that way. I'm in no way saying the game is perfect, but I definitely feel people may have lost sight of what an ARPG is, especially when it's also an MMO.

EDIT: for the people saying it's not an MMO, yes, it is. It's officially classified as one.
I'm with the OP I completely agree with his statement people need to chill.

In my country there are Universities offering courses related to video games that would actually NOT define this game as a MMO. It is with that regard--at least for my country--people in this industry would be considered neophytes if they were to use the term MMO when classifying PoE. Except people aren't neophytes, they misclassified things intentionally. Misclassifying PoE in MMO genre potentially get them more views, they care less about whether it is academically or politically correct.

I don't recall Chris @ GGG classifying PoE as a MMO? The ocular proof states otherwise. The operative word is INDUSTRY. The conglomeration of people, interests, etc. are not all part of what we call industry--given the current GGG business model. It's like trying to say a Shakespearean sonnet is exactly the same as an Italian sonnet from the Elizabethan Era (this of course would be false). Anyways, call what you want as you want; PoE is, and we are here in the experience of its being.

People just don't want to tag PoE as a MMO because they assume every MMO = WoW/EQ and clones and they probably hate them so to them MMO = bad.

This game is a MMO as much as games like Vindictus, C9, Dragon Nest. I call them lobby or instanced MMO.

Careful, you are making a hasty generalization with your first sentence for sure. I'd consider revising it. I do not think you speak for all of us. I won't be checking this thread anymore... I think Charan knows what I mean by this. Sometimes it's better to just never respond to a post at all--the community seems to retain a lot more snide individuals than, well, I refrain...

Except it's true. Every time someone say it's a MMO people rage like he said PoE is bad.

Did I mention him? The context I'm talking about is marketing. It is more akin to how pretty faces or celebrities are used to endorse products even though it has probably little to do with them.

Yes.

I am also aware of the extensive debates concerning the classification of Action MMO's and if they were appropriately labeled for the genre.

Ironically enough, it was DIII advertising on MMO sites that touched off the debates.

An amusing analogy would be the guys that used to harass people for playing AD&D when they were kids.

These days they play fantasy football, complete with player stat sheets that look remarkably similar to my old character sheets. But they'll NEVER touch an RPG, those are for geeks and nerds.
