The option to turn it on or off sounds best to me. it doesnt hurt those who dont want it to be displayed and helps the ones who would like to have some more information about what is going on.
I think just the bar itself and level of the enemy is just fine. But making it an option is fine too.
As an option I think it would be alright, but I am leaning on rather having no life bar for enemy's.
think of diablo1 or 2 with numbers... ugly... for me? no thanks!^^

If possible it should be a option from the options menu. Mayhap most items/features should be there as an option.

We all know you can not please everyone.

Therefore if there is an option to enable a feature or not then you may please a lot more people.
This kind of information would be perfect in an in game beasieary.
dont add numbers in the life bar, in the past there was always the thrill of not knowing how tough a nut your opponent is, that feeling will be lost if you continue with this.
especially in pvp mode.
idk but for me numbers sort of ruin the atmosphere of games.

agreeing here with most of the people stating that considering the overwhelming amounts of enemies, the majority of us will simply want to aoe down most mobs. The old style of no hp bars i believe will stay good and true.

possibly an interface option of hp bars for boss fights?
As several people have stated, the "monster lore" concept could work very well here. The basic concept being that as your specific monstor lore stat increases (by kills, skills, tomes, items, etc), you have access to more information about a monster, and more options you can enable, such as showing numerical life values, monster weaknessess, resistances, etc.

I would even go so far as to say that you shouldn't even see a life bar on a monster until you have at least some minimal monster lore skill about it.

You could also make the monster lore stat even more desirable by granting a slight damage increase against monster types based on the monster lore skill.
