Why PoE doesn't need floating combat text
|
Of all the words on my post u picked the FCT for some reason and then u add it being a feature for casual gamers somehow...
I get it .. just noticed u are a "Silver Supporter" so u were blinded by the real meaning of my words. Wont bother explaining to u because u will just see what u want to see and understand it the way all the PoE white knights ussualy understand things that arent seen from their biased pov. |

FCT can change gameplay in a way. Eventually people will start comparing. Eventually you will be in groups and people will say you're damage is too low or, eventually you will say that to someone else.
This can change gameplay. Maybe not for you, but once the Min/Max crowd start throwing numbers out, it will change it for some people. Some for the better, others for the worse. I'm not against FTC, mind you. I think the numbers are just static representations of damage and, in of themselves, are harmless. People who are going to use those numbers for entitlement or to belittle others will find other ways to do so anyway. |

OP's point is very valid, and the comparison to pokémon resonates perfectly despite what people say. POE like pokémon, doesn't need FCT - that's simply not how the approach to the damage output is intended in these two games.
It's pointless to every other extent than catering the players ego when he gets crits - a valid point indeed nevertheless. An optional FCT feature would be prefered to appeal to a broader audience, but damage numbers tends to bring trouble to their respective games... X class crits more than me, when I use Y ability! My Z class is useless! X class needs serious nerf when using Y build! Way too much damage compared to Z class! X ability is utterly useless when used with Y build - these players are scrubs! X ability only does Y damage compared to Z ability, that's not nearly enough! Don't play with people who play X class with Y build - they're all noobs for being inefficient! etc. etc.. etc... It can be very dangerous to implement FCT when balance becomes obvious and people then start to scream their lungs out. I wont bring up arguments like clutter and immersion, because that's a personal preference matter. |

" i wouldnt mind FCT, but only of the community promises NOT to use it as an excuse to whine!!! |

Honestly, there's no good or logical reason not to implement FCT as an option (not the default). I don't think we need the little health bars over each enemy, but those ever-increasing numbers are good feedback as to how much my character is improving. If you're concerned about your numbers being 'too low' in groups, then GGG can make sure they can't be shown to other players (you'd only see your own), and then don't tell them to the rest of your group.
I don't really understand this whole stance of 'everything is perfect - if you add even the slightest optional convenience whatsoever, you're selling out to those stupid casuals that want to ruin MY game'. Nothing would be forcing you to use FCTs if you think they're for 'casuals' only, and many people would find them helpful. Sure, there are game mechanics which should *never* be added since they fundamentally break the experience (like auction houses), but for things that don't affect gameplay whatsoever, adding options won't make any difference to the way you play. |

I agree 100% with the OP. We do not need floating combat text.
I can appreciate how some players who have logged many hours of play time in the early portion of the game might think that FCT is a good thing, or somehow desirable. In end game maps however, everything happens so fast and there are already so many effects flying across the screen that having floating combat text would not only be useless: it would be ugly to look at and seizure inducing. If you don't believe me watch one of the streams on twitch tv from an end-game team. The screen is so busy with special effects that adding numbers into the mix won't do anyone any good. |

" That's why you'd have to make it optional (and not the default). If you really don't want them, then you wouldn't have to see them. Those of us who actually like seeing them would be able to turn them on. Again, why is having an *option* so bad? All the arguments against FCT really boil down to complaints about how 'casuals' are going to ruin everything. |

It's pretty funny that this thread started as a comparison between a JRPG turn based kids game, and a Dungeon crawler aimed at manchild city.
Whether the feature is added or not simply means you have one more box to check in the options, so who really cares? Slayer of Mogar 2013

People,... they will make it 'OPTIONAL'.. which means if you don't want FCT then you won't see them... and people who do, will turn it on...
SEE, how easy that is. Both sides win. Everyone is Happy, joy joy joy. Let's all hug now. |

" And what about the guy that tells you you can't join his group because you can't crit for 5k damage? Or the guy that asks you how hard your zombies hit and then kicks you from the group ? FCT has a A LOT of downsides that none seem to think about. It's not only really ugly to look at in a game with this art design It's also a slap in the face to the people who did the art design. You're basicly telling them you'd rather watch yellow unreadable shit on your screen instead of the actual art. If they add this feature .. It will slowely destroy the community You'll go from theorycrafting idea sharing people to elitists that damage the community beyond repair Last edited by majexon#7305 on Feb 4, 2013, 12:31:04 AM
