Bots

http://www.blizzhackers.cc/viewtopic.php?p=4595099
I know its a few months back, but it seems kinda concerning, it's kind of inevitable even without a gold-based economy.
Thoughts? ..
Still alive.. are we?

Well, it could have been worse... :p

Spoiler

But seriously, I think bots can be a problem with this game over time. The accounts are free, so a botter can easily make a dozen accounts and go crazy. What I fail to see, though, is why anyone would other than to say they can. What can anyone gain by botting this game? More gold? We don't have any. More identify scrolls, orbs etc? Sure, but what's the point? If you have fifty orbs in your inventory, what will you use them for? And farming for items? Go ahead, but what do you plan on doing with them? Selling them? For what? We don't have gold here, and therefore I don't see the point in buying gold for real gold, and all that.

I just hope we can make our own leagues when the game launches. That way a botter can remain undetected in his or her own league with one player, and the rest of us don't have to worry about them at all.
"And that's how you die properly, sailor boy."
(The Witch)
The thing is that once we are in open beta things change a bit as they are permanent. For one new players will always be 'behind' older players in progression in default league. This will inevitably lead some to seek an advantage.
Some small section of the players will turn to bots to rectify this the fast way. A few will seek out accounts with chars already leveled to 100. Some will want to pay money for Large amounts of currency items to trade for items and skills to level faster. And a few will turn to bots them selves to advance quickly.
The least harmful of these to the default league overall is those players who run a bot or two for them selves to level or gain items as a lot of the time they do not participate in the economy of the game in order to avoid detection and keep their accounts. The most harmful are the larger bot farms that will come, Its not an if, they will come and GGG cannot stop it, only negate the negative effects somewhat. These bot farmers will run many accounts simultaneously collecting thousands of currency items and leveling many characters to high levels in order to meet the demand of the few players who just want 'end game'.
Unfortunately for the average player this will mean that certain high end currency items will be devalued. Picture trying to get a new unique item that you would really like for a build and your only options are to farm for months in the hopes of getting it, save up 300 GCP due to the devalued currency or pay $5 on one of the bot farmer websites. A grim picture but one that is true of any popular MMO.

/spam buy cheap GCP at www.cheapGCP.com
/spam buy cheap chaos orb at www.cheapchaosorb.com
etc...

it's naive to think just because someone don't use gold as currency in game there wont be a problem...

I understand what you're trying to say, but even if we don't have gold, orbs/uniques/rares will still be farmed and in the majority of cases be sold through a bot-farming website. Even if its not on a large scale like other games, it will definitely happen.

Agreed thoroughly, it will be very sad if this does happen in the long run. Apart from that, the spamming of bot farming websites shouldn't be too much of a worry, but since the game is going F2P who knows how they will approach this.

Small micro-transaction fee to use global chat (Approx $1 for 10 messages) and the introduction of in game 'clans' with clan chat will mostly solve the issue. It is about the only way for things to work as they cannot allow players to moderate chat due to labor issues. (This was tested in court for the old MMO Ultima Online, technically these people are preforming a service for GGG and thus entitled to minimum wage in the US. A very thorny area and one best avoided)
At least with micro-transaction for global model it is win - win. We players get access for broadcast messages, private chat groups and don't have to put up with spammers as most of the time the $1 fee makes it unprofitable to spam.

This ... someone will always try and make a quick buck if they can, and lets face it, D3 has proven that not only do botters roll in abundance, but so do idiots that dont mind buying imaginary items.

Are you fuckin serious... I will uninstall quit this game faster than you can blink if GGG ever gets the nerve to charge for chat. But lets face it , they arent so stupid to enforce this kinda rule ever. Thank god.

Bots are bots. The only real way to get rid of them permanently, is to leave them no reason to do what they do, and unfortunately, as long as their is morons out there willing to buy their goods, they will show their ugly faces.

Cheers.
GGG - Why you no?
I wouldnt worry about this too much because:

1) botting cant be prevented
2) The currency system in POE will work efficient to stop inflation
3) POE can be played quite solely

In a perfect world they could just leave global chat open to all, however it just does not work in pure F2P games. This has been showen over and over again. I am in no way saying that they will cut off all your chat options, just global broadcast messages to all players logged in.
Even discounting spam bots, too many people have different ideas of what is offensive and one good round of baby killing jokes will be enough to start riot big enough to force GGG to take this sort of action.
Trust me, within weeks of launch if not before we will have group chat channels similar to the # % @ and local options with # chat costing a small fee.

Yeah, I'd probably just get the fuck out if they charged me $1 for 10 messages. I'm playing a game, not buying a cell phone contract.
