Do spells still work with cast on crit?

I have been experimenting with it just recently and im not seeing any of the spell animations showing up for either ice spear, or discharge. I feel like that gem doesn't work with spells at all and I dont see it really doing anything at all atm.

Spells are the only thing CoCS can activate. It is triggered by attacks and casts spells.

You are doing something wrong it sounds like. You need to have an ATTACK ability (not a spell!) linked with Cast on Crit and a SPELL ability that has a chance to cast when you get a crit with your ATTACK.

Some more thoughts on leveling as I've hit the mid 40s.

* Don't delay getting the +1 Power Charge. The 4th Charge makes a huge difference because it gets you close to 40% Crit which is where things really start to smooth out when combined with ~2.5 attacks/second.

* I personally didn't spend forever on the wheel of life and instead just went up to Path of the Warrior. The build benefits from range + shield so you can survive fine. But, I'm playing in Domination and can afford to die. For Dom players, the earlier you can get to 40% crit and 2.5 APS, the sooner this build becomes really playable.

* I'm cheesing it with a 4L for now. It's okay, but I'll get a 5L tonight. If you stick with the 4L for a bit, I've found Firestorm to be the most generally useful CoC spell for 4L. It has good coverage, solid DPS, and can really melt mobs if it crits.

* Power Siphon + GMP is too much mana to handle at my level with 4% mana leech. I'm still using LMP and leveling GMP in my weapon swap. I don't have EB yet, but I do have a Dream Fragments ring which is sort of like having EB at this level. I'll probably need to level my Reduced Mana and Clarity a bit more before GMP become viable.

* I've been pleasantly surprised with Frenzy's single target DPS and I only have it linked to Added Fire Damage. It's infinitely sustainable with my mana leech and lets me face tank most rares with Enfeeble + 5% life leech.

That's some good info. Reminds me I need to be leveling some more gems in my weapon swap, OOPS! I've been leveling up with a 4L Spectral Throw using Geofris, it's stupid fast. Once I'm in my late 40's early 50's I'll probably switch to use CoC. Should be quick, after only 4 hours I'm level 38. I did a similar route as you have it sounds like. I went to grab Warrior node then went right into the Shadow tree.

Two other small notes:

* I did this by accident, but having some lightning damage on my wand has been surprisingly helpful. The speed/crit factor of this build produces a decent number of shocks with some lightning damage. This is especially true when running a full Frenzy stack on a boss/rare as you can stack up some shocks for an easy damage boost.

* CoC Ice Spear was instrumental for Cruel Weaver. Firestorm couldn't keep up with all the adds, but Ice Spears crazy crit rate + pierce meant adds were just freezing/exploding left and right. Weaver couldn't spawn adds fast enough with all the freezes. I don't mention this specifically because of Weaver, but as a general strategy for dealing with 'thick' groups of mobs. No pierce on Power Siphon can make it hard to hit targets stacked deep in a group, but Ice Spear makes quirk work of them.

I think I've come across a con for this build. Groups are pretty rough. The boosted mob HP makes mobs die slowly and makes it really difficult to maintain your power charge stack. No power charges and your crit tanks and you get a pitiful amount of CoC procs.

But, I think the solution is pretty straightforward. If you're going to be in a group for a while, swap out one of your blue gems for power charge on crit so your normal crits can sustain your power charges. You'll do less damage on your CoC procs, but at least you'll get CoC procs.

Definitely something I didn't really think about as I mostly play solo. Hoping to hit level 60+ this weekend and switch from ST over to using this.

It's an interesting idea to connect Storm Call to Culling Strike. Or, really, any CoC setup to Culling Strike.
