Am I actually enjoying D3???
" Needs more 'shit' to round out the emphatic language. Sort of loses all punch after the fifth 'fucktard' I'm afraid. (Yes, that's my gentle way of saying that while adult language is not against the rules, there are occasionally times when it might be good to have some self-restraint...or I might have to lay your soul to waste, in the words of the great philosopher Michael Jagger.) If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

" Forgive me for expecting a game, let alone a challenging one, from the "Apple" of Game Design. I should be grateful a company is willing to make a product for me. Why should we think anymore in video games. Corridors are way more fun to run through than mazes. Ramirez! Go kill Diablo, now! My Keystone Ideas: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/744282

" I am. I think the trick was to see D3 for what it is, and not for what I initially hoped it would be. The ones who were most upset with D3 were the ones who had experience with D2 and went into D3 with expectations. Expectations that were crushed.... But yes, I am. Like I said, I had to set my own ground rules. No AH, and playing HC. Right now I am in act 2 NM, playing Mlvl 1-2 except for act bosses when I turn it back to default. And yeah.. didn't want to start a thread like this at all. But oh well... just shows there is still pent up frustration about the game. Edit: It also demonstrates that people still haven't learned that they cannot make the entire internet think the same way they do about a topic. In Wraeclast, if someone tries to kill you... you just kill them right back. Last edited by Trapperkeeper#6979 on Nov 26, 2012, 12:13:53 PM

I really am happy for you. :)
Happier for me that I found PoE because I couldn't get past those expectations (and to think PoE was technically being made before those expectations were even an issue!), but I think your ground rules are very smart. Unfortunately I have at least 10 other things I'd rather be doing with my time than manually limiting my playstyle so severely as to enjoy a game I naturally would not, but it appears that these restrictions are well within your own sphere of acceptability. Sometimes I think, or perhaps even hope, that those not inclined to like PoE or rather to enjoy D3 and the other products of this post-WoW Blizzard are too busy playing those games and being a part of that community instead of coming here to cause friction because PoE isn't what they want. I'm a terrible optimist in this regard, but I don't think it's beyond the realm of civility to enjoy what you like and let others do the same without the need for crossfire between the two. I don't like Twilight, for example, and I love True Blood (even the books aren't that bad), but I feel no need to hit up the hundreds of Twilight boards and fora for any reason. Then again, I don't touch any TB boards either...mostly because I suspect they might be full of anti-twilight diatribe. ;) Point being, I really like that you've posted this because it's a fairly neutral, open-minded approach to something we too often see slammed and dismissed. I'm disappointed how others have reacted to it but let's be honest, they're in the off topic board for a reason. If I had more faith in that community, I'd recommend making a post on the D3 forum about your experiences. But I don't, so I won't. :) Question: is this PoE hiatus/D3 resurgence a result of the imminent Open Beta wipe or something else? You may have mentioned it earlier in the thread. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

Yes... I just can't bring myself to play POE right now knowing it will all be wiped in as little as a week's time. With what play time I have it's really not even enough time to experiment with a build.
Although, now that I have started a HC character, I will likely play that until I either get to 60 or he dies before coming back to POE. Side thought... what the hell is the point of white items in D3? Then they go and add grey items below that. Idiotic. In Wraeclast, if someone tries to kill you... you just kill them right back.

During the beta, you could scrap white items for use at the blacksmith. I'm not sure why they got rid of that, but it really reduced their usefulness to virtually zero. They might as well be gold drops of their sale value.
And if their only value is gold, and actual worthwhile drops are pretty rare, then it would indicate to me yet again that Blizzard really wanted you to use that AH. My heart really fell when I saw just how easily I could kit out my low level character using it, in conjunction with how much *shit* I was collecting throughout the course of play. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

" How about I put it this way. There are ZERO MEANINGFUL CHOICES in D3. There are tons of MEANINGFUL choices in D2. Correction... there are two choices in D3. HC or SC and Character class. Once you have made these choices you are finished with difficult decisions that will have impact over the entire life of your character. Essentially the D3 system favors the mindless automaton while the D2 system rewards intelligent thought process. So your last statement there is completely erroneous, it does matter how you put it. It all depends on how you define choice. In D3 you have a bunch of options, you can choose whatever you like, whenever you like. This is completely different from a system that actually forces players to make permanent choices. In this regard D3 has no choice outside the ones mentioned earlier. " Hey, cut that talk out while I am still enjoying this game! In Wraeclast, if someone tries to kill you... you just kill them right back.

charan - While LoTRO is an MMO, it doesn't matter.
The reason I like it is that it allows me to choose how I want to play a char right now. I never play D2 past nightmare because it's boring. I'm stuck in a build which doesn't change starting level 30, only gets stronger. That's why I like LoTRO and GW (originals), the chars are respeccable at will. As I said, the difference is not in them being MMOs but in having tactical depth. BTW, I'm in Act 1 NM with my Demon Hunter and it's tough. MP10 all the way. My Witch hunter is still stuck in MP10 normal Diablo. So I still have hope for Hell and Inferno. anubite - Your comments are starting to become more and more detached from reality. Though you've got one thing right - Bliz are the Apple of gaming. They give you a product with a lot of polish and bling but not many choices. If you had experience with Linux vs MacOS or know what you can do with an Android and Java vs an iPhone you'll understand. The analogy is complete with AH and Apple's app store. |
