Jay Wilsons list of Diablo 2 flaws
|
I did not compile this list. I just saw it and liked having it all in one place. It helps put into perspective what happened with the Diablo franchise.
Prior to release, during the development of Diablo III, Game Director Jay Wilson highlighted the myriad of flaws Diablo 2 and how his team prioritized in fixing these design flaws of D2 during D3's development, these are taken from transcripts of various interviews he gave over the past 2-3 years: Jay: "people’s memories of Diablo II were way different than the reality of Diablo II. They remember all kinds of stuff that never actually happened in that game." Jay: "when you ask them about game challenge, they remember what it was like in hell difficulty. They don’t remember what it was like in normal difficulty. They remember something that visually darker than it ever was. They remember a variety and depth of monsters that was never there." Jay: "It’s one of those things where if you love a game (Diablo II), then the things that are bad about it become endearing. Everybody remembers Deckard Cain saying, “Stay a while, listen.” But the reason they remember it fondly now is because it was so damn annoying! He said it every time, and you had to talk to him so often! Jay: "In Diablo II, the most optimal way to play was to find the quickest boss you can do, and repeat that boss run forever. It’s our intent to create a system that encourage people to play a lot more varied amount of content, and have that be the most beneficial way to play, such that the boss runs are really mitigated as a primary things that people do and become more secondary." Jay: "One of the pieces of feedback we got during the internal alpha was that skill points as an element of our skill system didn't really suit the game, It created a lot of conflict in terms of what the players would choose to do. So what we had is this system that has these six – it used to be seven, now six – slots, that implies that you should have six skills, but a system with skill points? Well, you really want to dump every single point into one skill. " Jay: ""I feel that in a lot of ways the current system has more choice involved in it compared to Diablo II because that finite limit of how many skills you can take versus the number that you have means that you have to make a very restrictive choice, so we focused a lot more on restricting the number of skills you have and having that be the interesting choice, as opposed to skill points, which are really commitments before you even know what you're committing to." Jay: (Regarding DII's Skill System) "What you probably did was go up on a website and find out what the optimal build was, because there's just too much math involved for you to really get involved in it. A small number of players will go in and do the math… but the majority of players will go 'I don't know, I guess I'll just put it in whatever I already have'." Jay: (Regarding Stat Distribution In D2) "Stat progression as a system is very difficult for a lot of players to understand because you get these 5 points, but you don’t exactly know where to put them or what benefit you’re getting with them. You might make some obvious choices, for example, with Diablo II’s Sorceress, you might put all of your points into energy because that’s the obvious choice, right? Except that for almost every build out there, you’ve just made the wrong choice." Jay: "Any system where you have to go up onto the Internet to figure out what the right answer is, is not a good customization system. Any system where there’s a “right” answer is not a good system for customization. The truth is, with stat point systems, they are simple math. It’s not hard to figure out what the absolute best choice is so we decided we didn’t want that as a customization system. With that being said, we do have another system we’re working on. The specific intent of it is to capture the imagination of what stat point spending was supposed to do, which is, “I want to be stronger. I want to be tougher.” These kind of simple ideas are not contextualized well within a skill system. The skill system is about what the player is doing, not higher ideals about what their character is. So, we’re going to work on a system that really satisfies that feeling, but is way easier to understand and also has some true customization to." Standard Forever

Noob Jay Wilson. He did the opposite of what he intended to. Dumbing points into 1 skill for 1 character is what makes you play the game for a long time, why does it have to be One Man Army for every character? It ruined the replay value.
And yes, I actually mean the perk one man army from MW2, which allowed you to swap classes at any time, and the pro version allowed u to do it even faster. So, if u imagine MW2 Multiplayer without create a class, but you just run around with every single weapon/lethal/tactical/attachments without even having perks in the game, then this is pretty much a first person shooter version of D3. ...And look stuff up on the internet for builds..... SO???? The thing is that there are many diffrent builds. Why would anyone give a f£€£ if its on the internet or not... So if somebody creates a D2 Bone Necromancer guide on the internet, then Diablo 2 was suddenly a piece of shit game??? Its not even a part of the game... Its just on the internet... WTF? And btw ppl do use internet for deciding their "builds" in D3 aswell. (More like their loadout in the "skilltree".). Also, because D3 is mostly about optimal builds, then D3 "failed" even more than D2 in that "aspect", then Jay tells us that this was a "problem" in D2, but in D3 this is an even bigger "problem" than it "was" in D2, so just shut the fuck up NOOB Jay Wilson, ur not even making any fucking sense at all really. Nobody even fucking cares if there is stuff about the game on the internet. Maybe Jay should just ban gameplay trailers, ban gameplay videos, ban D3 guides and tutorials, and basically the D3 name on the internet. Just dont blame D2 for having a "problem" that was never even there. Then you say you will "fix" this so called "problem" in D3, but in D3 this "problem" is even "worse" than it "was" in D2. Stupid Jay Wilson OMG. |

I think he makes a lot of sense. Diablo 3 isn't a perfect game by a longshot, but it's not nearly as bad as a lot of people think, and it's getting better. Despite how disappointed I was when I reached Inferno, I'm still looking forward to the expansion. The few flaws in D3 isn't all that important compared to the vast amount of greatness in there.

I don't think you can defend nor should you defend D3 on this site, son.
There might be a way to salvage D3 at this point but it was so atrociously bad... I mean look at the itemization. No competent developer does that kind of horrible itemization. And... the graphics? Why WOW aesthetic? Diablo isn't supposed to be WOW. My Keystone Ideas: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/744282

" I find 'son' to be unnecessarily condescending. Please refrain from that sort of thing here, anubite. __ I agree that Jay Wilson fucked up big-time. It's 'Stay a while AND listen.' Hmph. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

Hey Stryker how about this...you & Fireskull add eachother to skype then you two can circlejerk bash D3 & Jay Wilson till the cows come home. We know you guys hate D3 but you aren't saying anything that you haven't already spammed in the numerous D3 hate threads that already exist. You don't like D3...we GET it!

Solution: Force the player to rewind the story over and over and over and over again. Srsly, how the fuck do you go from "it was annoying, that you had to talk with Cain so much" to making people listen to the NPC's all the time? Jay Wilson gotta be the worst designer ever, so many stupid decisions. Danskere: PM mig, hvis I har brug for en guild.

" Its weird that you freaked out on me in this thread papercut. I didn't post any D3 hate in this thread. Its just Jay Wilson quotes. If you don't want to read what I post then don't enter the threads that I create? You posted today in my other thread to add you on steam. I'm not sure if that's a good idea at this point. " Actually, I'd never seen anything Jay Wilson purportedly said about D2, so I found this quite an interesting read. (It could be all made up, but hey, it doesn't seem entirely outlandish.) My thanks to stryker for entertaining and enlightening. This is what gaming fora are all about. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

All these statements are the typical cannon fodder that gets slung around the D3 forums ad nauseum & really that's where they should stay. Yes Jay Wilson is an idiot & said some dumb as a brick statements but yawn, it's old news, since then they already made a ton of other dumbass statements that make the ones listed above pale into insignificance. I understand folks are really disappointed in D3 but for the love of christ it's now time to get over it and move on. There's butthurt fanbois then there's D3 butthurt fanbois but noone wants to hear a broken record going on & on about the same stuff that's already old news. It's not objective & noone is actually right so unless you just like the sound of your own voice talking about it now is as pointless as a chocolate teapot.
