[UBUNTU 13.04] Failed resetting Direct3D device objects

I'm getting this same error on OS X 10.8.5 under Wine.

I don't think it's related to graphics cards specifically- I'm using an Intel HD 4000.

I do have several more DirectX components installed than this game actually requires (since I'm playing it via my PC Steam Wine bundle). Could it be related to that?

It's also worth mentioning, the game doesn't even start for me. As soon as I press play I get the error. Deleting the config did not help.
the error itself is a generic directx error. it can be caused by a lot of different things. most are driver or related problems (or missing required directx components).

in Linux, it's often caused by missing 32-bit glx libs. but that isn't the only cause obviously.
I managed to get it to run by setting fullscreen to true in the .ini, though.

Now, it crashes while loading with the following errors:

Spoiler

I seem to also recall there being something in the logs about the game asking for a double buffer but not being supported or something along those lines?

Nota Bene this line:

In relation to my error.

Edit: had to cut a bit out of the error logs to get it to post, tried to cut mostly duplicate stuff.

what type of audio card do you have? does it work of you use --nosound or -swa on your launch parameters?
Intel High Definition Audio.

--nosound in the (Steam) launch parameters does indeed get the game launching. The next problem is... there's no sound =P

which is why I suggested -swa as well
I'll try that, too. Not familiar with -swa. What's the function?

Edit: Launching with -swa causes the original audio error.

software audio.
Now, with --nosound, I can make a character, but once I try to get in game I get another crash:
