Sad to hear you losing will to play, hope you had your fun and will have more sometime later :) I've been running a 115/370 summoner in hc for a few months and a ~100/200 one before that, and came to a similar conclusion - the RNG seems a bit flawed and not uniform enough. I woudn't say it's bad though, but it can be depressing for prolonged periods of time.
I was luckier than you though, having gotten a shavs drop and many other neat items which basically allowed to sustain several high-lvl characters without resorting to trading. Or maybe it's not just luck, but rather a time investment - i've been averaging 0.5-2 tabs of uniques each day while doing few hours worth of runs on the Solaris curtains, so in total that's a crapton of chances to get a jackpot :)

The only reason why RNG can get so awful in POE is because there are no cut-offs for lower brackets.

-You can roll a ilvl 70 item with 6 lines of lvl 1-10 mods because ALL mod brackets from 1-70 are available.
-You can roll a low level unique (and base items) in a level 77 map because of the exact same reason.

Other games have a linear progression in loot that almost always ensures that the magic/rare tier items you get in a lvl 50 zone will ALWAYS be better than a lvl 15 zone, because low level loot (something like lvl 1-40 in the example) will not drop at all.

This is not the case with POE. There are MULTIPLE accounts by people on how they have not found an upgrade to their gear since 20-30 levels ago (example being a lvl 50 still using a wand he found at lvl 25). And with the RNG + loot table of POE, that is certainly possible.

This was GGG's method of "balancing" the game to make trading a necessity for those who are not lucky enough and wish to do end-game mapping. Obviously this is not a very casual-friendly mechanic, and even some not-so-casual players are not able to tolerate it.

Playerbase still seems fine for now, we'll have to see how well the population for POE will maintain after launch. If the playerbase keeps dwindling to the RNG fatigue, GGG will be forced to make changes eventually.
Agree, the 'crafting' system is a beautiful thing implemented horrifically bad.

Simplest way to fix the crafting system is to make either
1) eternal orbs drop as much as chaos orbs, that everybody can progress throughout the game without losing their progress.
2) make orbs drop 3 times as much and have recipes for all the orbs.
3) allow for an orb that drops as much as a divine that raises an armor or weapon to the next tier of equipment. That way we can slowly upgrade our gear to suit our needs without losing the stats or the layout of the slots/colors.

They basically are going to have to increase the drop rate on orbs by a massive amount or its going to lead to RMT or the ultimate horror duping.

Put yourself in this situation you are a solo player who doesn't like to trade in a game game with zero system for it,what are your options you either;

Play for the years it would take to self find perfect starting items to craft then you need 4 exulted and 4 eternal orbs per item per slot when you have found all this supposing the universe still exists you then rage quit as each roll gives you increased light %.

or

Spend the trivial amount of cash to buy orbs from cheaters getting yourself banned at some point.


If you wont up the orb drop rate then you will have to remove the RNG element from crafting make it like enchanting, Have fixed orb effects so we can actually craft stuff.

Because really when people have played your game for hours every day for months on end they deserve to have something to show for it, all most have is rage.
