AH is only viable if there is a standard currency in the game like gold.
The bartering/orb system in POE seriously complicates an AH. If someone bid 20 fusing orbs on an item, who is to say how many chaos orbs or gcps it takes to outbid it? If GGG just declared the only currency that could be used on the AH was Chaos, that could seriously hurt the overall economy.
A better solution (and what I expect they will likely implement) would be someone puts an item up for sale and over the course of 1-3 days other uses can post offers consisting of Orbs, items or some combination of both. Then the seller can browse through those offers and choose which if any to accept. It would be a single system that allows selling, trading and bartering and would likely be able to be managed through the website/forums like GGG has stated they want to do.
Simply list your item. Under currency, you state you are willing to take 1 ex, or 12 GCP or 40 chaos. When a person pays, they put down 40 chaos and buy it. You can perhaps have 3 different currencies per item listed. If you will only accept a pure ex, only put down 1 pure ex. We can also currency exchanges set up, and you can maybe put up 3 exes and state you will exchange for 12 gcp, 40 chaos, etc, then use the 40 chaos to buy something in an auction where the guy will only take 40 chaos.
What you described is not an auction. Just a sale of an item. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but the thread title states auction house. Which means bidding, outbidding and probably buyouts.

Yes, I believe that is the only way it will work in this game. Basically a sale or buyout system. A pure AH I can't see working, due to the currencies. Still, a way to sell items and search for items without watching a giant wall of text that takes up 1/2 of your screen is needed.

No doubt. Also 95% of the people in trade chat are selling. And while someone might be interested in buying items if they see something, its not worth keeping trade chat open and getting spammed for that small chance. The really big posts actually slow my FPS. That's when trade chat gets shut down fast.

I can see the need or desire for an auction house in WoW where the world is so immense and spread out that trading would be next to impossible on a global scale, but here in PoE where you can just join a trade channel that spans all acts/difficulties, it is actually accessible therefore doesn't warrant the need for a centralized trading system.
