I would however link it to your account, and not a character basis.. since this would be abused and could potentially introduce bots..

Problem with this would be that people on different time zones, or with different work or study schedules would have an advantage/disadvantage in a competition of that sort, maybe not being able to even compete at all.

For encouraging competition, other things can be implemented, like daily public statistics (Faster party on beating the challenge, faster solo on beating the challenge, higher average DPS) and cumulative ones (consecutive challenges completed without dying). This way each player can choose to compete against others or not, but everybody can get to enjoy the challenge.
