The Ultimate Hardcore vs. Softcore Thread

I play in both leagues, so I'm not really sure why there is so much animosity between leagues.

I like HC for the added challenge, and I like SC for making goofy builds and experimenting. Most people I know who play prefer SC, so I tend to have more characters in that league. I had a ton of fun in Season 1 with all the HC races, so I've started playing a bit more in HC when my friends aren't playing. The only difference that I have seen between the leagues is that you want to build much more defensively in HC and try to be a bit over leveled for some of the tougher fights. HC is limited on build variety due to its nature of having only one life, while SC allows for much more creative builds, because a few deaths isn't that big of a deal.

In the end, both leagues are fun. Personally, I can't wait for Custom Leagues, because I'd love to do a multi-month HC Ancestral League.

What? I didn't say I was better than everyone in HC/Onslaught, you have the shoe on the wrong foot.

I play this game to pass some time and have fun. You take it way too seriously.
I think your main issue is that you think not dying in a videogame is some kind of achievement.
You achieved the same wasted time as me, irregardless of deaths.

Bro, you have a serious problem, you better get that checked out! Not sure what kind of doctor can diagnose this one though. Where does one go for video gaming related arrogance problems? sarcasm.end();

On topic though, no one is really allowed to judge anyone else based upon which league they play in because you have no idea why they are playing that league. Yeah, some people might feel superior for playing HC if they knew everyone who played SC did it because they feared the "challenge". It's the same with Onslaught, they might feel superior playing a game mode that is definitely harder (based on the sheer fact that every single damn monster is faster), but you have to take into account WHO exactly you might be trying to feel superior to.

Herpes McDerpson likes to have fun playing SC, and some random HC player likes to say to himself that, "I have never died." (SC players who haven't died don't take this the wrong way). Everyone plays games for their own reasons, and that's that.

There is a certain arrogance present in some HC players...I would wager they fall into the "online at least 8 hrs a day 7 days a week crowd" made up of college kids, the unemployed, wealthy nerds, and sons/daughters of wealthy nerds. The notion that stacking life, playing same 4-7 builds, over-leveling, and playing extremely cautious all the time somehow makes a player "better" is pretty laughable though. It makes you better at being cautious, sure, but it doesn't make you a more skillful player. I play Onslaught/HC and the playstyle is draining sometimes. I can't play HC all the time because it just isn't as fun when I only have 30-60 mins to play and actually want to relax/ have fun.

Skill is skill. If you make a build that you can run in high end maps with great success, you are likely a skilled player regardless of where you are playing. If you have a lvl 90 toon in softcore league that can solo, I respect your skill as much as the same lvl 90 HC toon. The level 90 HC toon doesn't have more skill than the SC, they likely have equal skill and play considerably more cautious and took a lot more time to get to that point. That isn't indicative of any extra skill or ability except patience.

Manually dodging, good combos, effective trapping/bottle-necking, good crafting know-how, etc. are all skills that exist across the entire player base. Playing cautiously is not a skill, it is a style. The experience penalty in SC is a skill check... it ensures that people who cannot play well or craft successful builds will not level into the upper echelons.

"A cannot die mode" would be standard right. And you're talking about HC.
Okay, how can I understand you when you don't understand yourself.

Also, I'm loving all the comments on tone. Because tone is transfered through a series of tubes all the way from me to you.

Inorite. I'm not entitled to an opinion. You're allowed yours, but mine is sheer arrogance.

My casualness towards standard is through sheer arrogance, while the HC players attitude of "he plays scrubcore so he doesn't count" is nothing but humble.

I'm finally getting to grips with you guys.
