Chris, listen to me, or whoever is in charge. This system doesn't add a single positive thing to the game. The only thing it does is frustrate people. Mark my words: You will not hear the end of this from your player base, and for good reason. It breaks up combat because you have to go get your item or someone doesn't pay attention for a moment and they lose an item to another player. It literally encourages players to NOT play with each other.
You want the world to feel unforgiving, and that fine. Do that in art, difficulty, story, music, enemies, etc... not an item system. What if we applied that logic to another element in the game? Let's make things less forgiving and intentionally sabotage the UI and controls. Now, there's a 5% fail chance when you try to click something or issue a command to your hero. It's more intense now right? No, it's just silly!
If you built in a system where players both compete against each other while playing on the same team, that's totally different. If this was 4 Swords or Mario Kart story mode (if there is such a thing... unlocking tracks and stuff) it has a built in system. You're working together, but you're competing for a score board. However, for PoE this is clearly an after thought. Are you telling me that you play other RPGs and loot based games and think to yourself: "You know what would make my experience better? If other people took my loot %10 of the time."
Come on...
You are completely right.
Trolls like Vooodu just want to take advantage of other players and ruin their fun. They don't want it fair, they want the system to reward jerks, like it currently does.
A toxic community like that will destroy a game.
If this was truly FFA cutthroat looting, we'd be able to kill each other over loot. It's not. It's a system that lets players like Vooodu profit and punishes those who won't or can't be jerks in return.
It's completely nonsensical. It needs a change. Put in the goddamn loot options already. All of you "FFA" purists can make your pwecious widdle fwee-fow-aw groups and bugger each other.

Solution
Make group play much harder than now which is piss easy so that players farming solo/group should have more or less equal efficiency.
Right now people who are unhappy with FFA looting are FORCED to play in groups because grouping makes everything a cakewalk and most noobs are able to clear maps they otherwise cannot.
That could solve part of the issue, but gut instinct tells me some people would still be unhappy with only one single looting option (either FFA or instanced, or w/e).

You're the one who said something along the lines of "I join ninja kick groups and take their loot to make them cry".
I doubt it was simple sarcasm.

Yeah. Run a business with that attitude and see how many customers you have left. In the real world generally you kiss your customers' feet to make sure they keep coming back for business.

GGG does not want people to leave. You are helping no one with that attitude.

1.) Picking up items while fighting is rather simple. Unless of course you have a horrible build that dies in seconds.
2.) Saying that " It literally encourages players to NOT play with each other" is a load of BS. Truth would be, it encourages certain kinds of players with entitlement issues not to play with each other.
I play with cool players in FFA games ALL the time. The lack of bitchin' about drops is so relaxing. Why is that players like that have no problems killing, looting and moving on wether they get all the drops or not?
3.) The faster you can understand its NOT your loot the easier everything becomes.
Voodu, you're such an adorable troll that I had to bite.
1. I have a great build and I pick up loot during the fight all the time. I get more loot in pub games than I lose. Doesn't mean I enjoy the system.
2. It does in fact encourage me not to play with others... Why? Well, you know, it's a game, and I like to do the parts of the game I enjoy. Since I don't enjoy FFA loot systems, I play by myself a lot more than I would if the game had a better loot system. Entitlement's got nuthin' to do with it.
3. Oh I understand it just fine. And.... I want to change it!

What the whiners fail to realize is that there are just as many, or more, people who love the FFA loot system. Take it out, and they stand to lose just as many players or more than extending the timers.
Extending the timers is just going to fuck the entire flow of the game. Now instead of everyone rushing and scrambling for loot, you got half your party standing around for 10 seconds to pick up some shit piece of loot that's going to be a garbage roll and vendor for a few shards anyways.
If you don't like the game mechanics, go play a different fucking game.

Got some numbers to back that up?

I'm not asking them to take it out. I'm asking them to give us the option to configure it. At that point, you'd be the whiner since you're free to play how you want and I'm free to play how I want.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no thanks. I'm going to instead lobby to have a game I enjoy be improved in a signifcant way.

Voodu's problem is that he actually believes this. As if people don't know how the system was designed.

people shouldn't be rushing for loot in the middle of a fight.
besides the fact that it favors certain classes and completely unbalanced.
