Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
" Then what is it? If it's not either of those? (<-- Joke as I realize you made a typo) Once again, you are claiming look that's not claimed. If it's on the ground, it's free. Period. (I hope the other guy likes this.) The name is not ownership. It's to make it fair. That's it. So that everyone has a fair chance to get the loot. And yes, it's hardcore for me to be able to do whatever I want in the game. Whether I can help the team, or hurt it. Whether I can steal loot, or keep it. Either way, I get choice. Choice is hardcore. :) At least for me. " Well, no. What gives my arguement weight is the fact that it's what the devs want. They want it cut-throat. They are trying to find a way to make it not "broken" as you call it. See, they want it fair, in the sense that no one is disadvantaged by things beyond their control like ping. But they want it cut-throat, where you can be screwed by your team mates if they so choose. Yes, it's beyond player control, but at the same time, it's in another player's control too. It must be one way or the other. If one is chosen, the whole point of the other is failed. There is no point to play with an FFA system is you can actively choose to avoid it. It doesn't have to be anti-social. But the fact that it can be is awesome. Giving an out, where I'm forced to, not choosing to, share loot with people is what bothers me. Some say it's giving choice. I say it's taking it away. " It's softcore because it forces me to cooperate. You might say, "If you don't want to, then don't join a group." Then maybe I want better loot and to fight stronger monsters, which requires I join a group. Maybe I want to screw people over. I don't, but not the point. I want choice. Choice is hardcore. |

" There's some right and some wrong here. If GGG makes the choice, then you're absolutely right. There is no "both." GGG is half-assing the looting system right now, which I don't think anyone is really happy about. On the other hand, GGG can give OPTIONS to play one way or another. This will not at all take away from gameplay from "Hardcore" players because they can just have their own parties with their own loot rules, and the same number of items will enter the economy. Also, this is ridiculously easy to implement. You just add one short integer field in every party called the "base timer." Every time the system calculates a loot timer for someone in that party, it starts with the base timer, makes adjustments for distance (possibly also adjusted by the base timer value), and then sets the timer to that time. Eventually everyone in the community will figure out a range of "base timer" values they're comfortable with, and play with groups that have timer values in that range. Literally everyone gets what they want, and the negative impact on "decision making" is negated for people who want the "gritty" feel of FFA looting. Also, you should note that I put "Hardcore" in quotes, because FFA looting is anything but "Hardcore." It's false competition over items, because there's no decision-making over what you should grab and what you should leave, it's 100% stop fighting and click shiny stuff. Actual competition over loot and actual decision-making processes include "If I, as a dagger Shadow, loot that really cool-looking 2-hand sword, will that 2-hand Sword Duelist leap slam my face into the dirt, kick me out of the party, and take that plus all the other loot I've collected up to this point?" " Yes, but that was before I realized why hardcore is hardcore. Choice. Personal choice, specifically. FFA loot gives the greatest amount of personal choice, without destroying community choice at the same time. Loot options would destroy personal choice, almost entirely, while empowering community choice. I prefer the latter, rather than the former. And I don't think GGG's desire is to grow the game to the maximum (they want it to grow, but aren't concerned about getting the most people to play it as they can). Their desire is to make a game they enjoy. That's how it started, so I assume that's how it will continue. " Umm, no. Well, kinda. They don't specifically go together, but when it comes to possibility, they do. Hardcore implies that it is "Hard". Or rather, that it can be. Getting screwed over by your teammates can make a game hard. No, it wouldn't. I agree. What are you talking about? You lose your character if you die in Hardcore. At least the league. What game have you been playing? |

" No? Currently there is no personal choice as far as loot goes. Create your own party = your choice, or join a game with the rules you would follow. To be honest, timers aren't cutthroat or hardcore or anything significant. If you want hardcore, then you should be asking GGG to make it so we can kill each other to claim loot. IGN: Mibuwolf

Alright, we agree everyone wants choice.
So, we stay with FFA. FFA is choice. You decide if you want the loot and if you want to try and click on it. No one decides that but you. However, if you have the option to decide what loot system is used by your group, you decide it for everyone in your group. Only you get choice in that instance. That is not hardcore. |

mmmm no.
giving options to choose the way you want to group actually gives greatest amount of personal choice, otherwise youl need to play the game & ninja. where is the choice in that ? u can say, oh but you dont need to ninja stuff. oh but i do need, when thats the only option available cause if i dont, ninjas get serious advantage. they loot my stuff, u dont loot their stuff. choice ! choice is hardcore. " Yes, there is. You decide if you strive for the loot in our current system. If you don't, you get none. It's simple as that. Or you can solo. Up to you. And I already suggested that. Go to page 600 or so. Or 530-540. |
