I agree.

Loot is not your immediate reward for combat, but very much part of it. If you make yourself so incapable to get inside the action and pick up some reward, leftovers is what you'll get.
To hold some items for a second is as much uncertainty of the situation the game can stretch for you.
Playing in a group provides you a great deal of protection, and you are at the mercy of the players that hold you above water very rightfully. At this point when it's not any longer a discussion about latency or fairness, what is the incentive to drive people to the battlefronts?

EDIT// Bad post
Indestructible, determination that is incorruptible
From the other side, a terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable, every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible, take a last look around while you're alive
I'm an indestructible master of war

Ask yourself this... What would Jesus do?

I would like to think he would make looting equal and not just reward the greedy people who live to grief others by ninja looting.

he would probably turn that one crappy white item into a unique like they say he did with water and wine

jesus cheats.

Actually I like the allocated loot system. It does not create competitivity between party players.
Isn't that EXACTLY the system we already have in place? Items get allocated for a time based on your runspeed and distance from the item, plus about one second?

Yeah, pretty sure what you just described is the one we're currently using.

Honestly I feel like it would work much better if you just added a base of 2-4 seconds to the timer instead of 1 second. Just yesterday I was in a US gateway public group while I was connected to singapore and living in australia and was getting a smooth 450ms latency, farming cruel fellshrine and a mid-level currency item dropped with my name on it. I immediately clicked on it, my character ran over and stood on it and I was waiting for him to pick it up but then the timer expired and someone else got it. It seems like lag stopped that from working. The timer just needs to be a BIT longer to stop this kind of bullshit from happening.

Also another problem with looting is the camera angle. If you're playing a ranged character fighting mobs who are "south" or "downward" from you, you can't see nearly as far as if they're "upwards" from you, so if an item drops into the melee with your name on it, you probably won't even know that it was there. That's not cool.
FFA loot worked 'back in the day' when the gaming community as a whole wasn't terrible

Doesn't work today, too many jerks.
I'll post my 2c

FFA loot is bad, it's just really, really bad.

The excuse of competition between players is bogus. The whole point of partying in PvE is to COOPERATE towards a common goal. FFA loot simply removes the cooperation and turns it into a competition. We have leagues and PvP for competition.

By having FFA loot, you will also create situations such as boss fight scripts involving many enemies or special actions to be frowned upon because people WILL stop the fight to rush for the item that just dropped and possibly end up wiping the entire team.

FFA loot? Boss at 3% about to kill everyone except you? Well, let everyone die, finish boss yourself and grab everything !

There is zero justification towards FFA loot except for people who enjoy griefing others because that's what it is, griefing. Everyone worked towards the goal, hence everyone should have a fair chance at something.

If you keep FFA loot, slowly, but surely people will stop partying with randoms and just solo or stay with friends...and well playing with friends is the same as removing FFA loot by yourself.

Simply put, it is wrong and naive to expect people to act rationally and remain courteous in a FFA loot environment. This is not how it works. There have been largely enough games before this one demonstrating FFA loot is a mechanic abused by griefers and lootmongers alike and never ever benefit the fair players. Not to mention the amount of trashtalk and animosity this will create.

Leave FFA loot to the past, we are in 2013, find another solution.

Current loot system is perfect. The devs designed this game with the intention that looting WILL BE competitive. Even with a timer to allow ranged and laggers a chance at getting items it still accomplishes that. If you dont like it you either need to get used to it, or play another game. Sadly, thats really all there is to it. Its not changing. This game wasn't made to cater to "2013 gamers" who think loot is supposed to handed out freely..not even close. It was made by people FOR people that want the opposite. Why can't you people understand this?

"We're a small independent team of hardcore gamers based in New Zealand and have created Path of Exile as the game that we'd want to play ourselves."

That is quoted right off the front page of the website. They dont want to play instanced loot, free respecs, auction house games....
The item is yours when it is in your bag.

Yet..they already said they made changes which they don't agree with but they understood it's good for the game.. so..I believe ..this is will just one of these changes :P :)
They arent going to change the core functions of the game. Too many people supported this game with too much money to do that.

They added a timer to the loot. They have compromised enough already.
