Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

The problem with the system is that people interpret it differently. Some people think that once their name is on the item, it's "theirs". This is not the intent of the devs. Unfortunatle, the intent of the devs isn't fun when I click 5 times on my orb and it doesn't apparently register. Then some punk takes the orb and doesn't say a word. Is that fun? Is that good game design? What does this add to the experience, losing out on an item you briefly felt entitled to?
my biggest problem is watching a guy running around opening chests off your view range and snatching items while ur not there to even claim.

So many posts in this thread outline the basic problem with the player experience of this loot system. This is another good one imo.
Why not make a voting system for parties?

Vote what should be ffa, what should be put on a timer, how long that timer lasts for, etc. Have a default option but allow separate parties to vote on what they want. It seems dumb to me that we can't vote on a separate system after playing MMO's.

I hate this FFA system thats why im the guy that jacks chests just out of view.
I agree with Kicksy. Have a voting system for different kind of looting systems.

Like:

FFA (No timers)
Timers
Allocated (no timer but allocated to random players in order)

I really don't like the looting system as it is right now, I'm forced to play Singleplayer because in MP I can't get orbs or rares because I'm ranged. Forcing people to play SP when they want to play MP is bad design, it really is. There's no 2-ways around that. Adding an additional looting system doesn't hurt anyone, especially if it's voted upon, all fair and everyone's happy. Why please 50% of the players while giving the finger to the rest?

People can go on about how in D1/2 or before the timer was implemented, how unfair it was then, but I still don't understand the system. Instead of fixing something that is clearly broken, you _almost_ fix it but just don't go the whole way. It's like the loot system before the timer was 100% broken, now it's 50% broken, why not fix it entirely? It's clearly a system that doesn't work well, but the 3G game design principle is stronger than public opinion, and it's sad.

Just have instanced loot in an optional paid league. That way, those who wish to play the real PoE benefit from it as well.

The loot on the ground is not your loot
Fair point. It's 'the party''s loot. Yet, during the time it has my name on it, it's mine. The loot system decided that I was the only one supposed to be able to have it.

Whether you are for FFA or not, this is the one misconception that needs to be addressed. The timer does NOT mean you are supposed to have the item. The timer is there to give you a fair CHANCE to loot the item due to your ping or range from it. It does not mean you are the one that is supposed to end up with said item. So, in fact, the current philosophy of the loot system is that everyone should have a fair chance at any drop, even people that DO NOT have their name on the item when it first appears. This is the system the developers currently have in place. You may not agree with it, that's fine, this thread is here to discuss such things. But please understand that, currently, the loot system in place is a FFA system with accessibility, not a system that decides who should have certain items.

That's cool in theory, but in reality for those who don't come to forums and just play the game, the overall opinion is going to be "It had my name on it, it was mine".

That's a reality that some Pro-FFA people are going to have to realize. To the average regular joe game player, name = own.

I wasn't speaking to anyone who is not on the forum. How would I ever expect them to read my post? I totally understand that many people who do not read the forums may draw the wrong conclusion about the intent of the loot system. It would not be hard to do. The problem is that even people posting in this thread fail to understand the intention of the loot system, even though it has been stated over and over again. I am not saying it is obvious to everyone or defending it one way or another. I am just trying to correct a misconception that is running rampant.

As long as the paid league is for the FFA lovers I'm cool with that. Especially, since they are the vocal minority on the loot situation on the forums and in-game.
I'd rather it be the other way around if anything, since Instanced Loot lovers are the minority. Yeah I can make stuff up just as easily as you can (Implying that both of us made wrong statements).
