Choosing from 1 and 6 ports I'll always take 1 portal option. Reason?
Single portal force me to play with more balanced build.
If something is too hard just lower the difficulty.
If you are dying to often maybe the content you do is too high. Farm T10 instead of T14 for few days/weeks, get better gear and then try T14. Maybe you should just transmute + aug your maps and don't take those fat juicing explicit nodes on atlas passive tree that makes your maps even harder. Also you don't need run all maps. Skip/reroll bad map mods. Like f.e. Im CI and im rerolling all burning ground maps.
No one is standing above you and forcing you to climb to the highest maps/content. The sun won't go out if you play a little on lower difficulty :)
Cool, wouldn't mind if they did that either. I'll always pick 6 portals because you can farm all day for divines in this game anyway, no amount of rewards could ever motivate me to play the game in an even slightly harder mode. Then the people that want to have fun will be happy, and everyone else that wants to play pseudo-hardcore will be happy too.

It's a really stupid concept really. Imagine spending hours grinding those towers to juice your map only to get 1 shot on something you don't even saw/know and laying there with a gray screen in front of a divine orb.
Nobody asked for 1 portal. Why fix something that isn't broken. Also its not even a high risk high reward concept since if you're doing boss maps, the boss doesn't even drop good loot sometimes.
Also, imagine if someone plays the game for the first time. No idea how build and crafting works. If they want to maintain/acquire new players. they should have just stick with the 6 portals map.

Don't try to fix something that isn't broken, just bring back 6 portals in softcore, the people who want only 1 attempt can choose to play so anyways or they can just play hardcore.

6 Portals but with every death the Item rarity and quantity gets reduced for said map.

EXACTLY!!!
So that's why 6 portals and 6 deaths is the obvious choice.
If you want only 1 portal 1 death, you can just only use 1 of the 6.

Nope, it didnt work perfectly fine as you say, it rewarded the most obnoxious playstyles with glass cannon rarity builds throwing themselves at maps, dieing 5 or 6 times and still bringing more loot from one map than anyone with a proper balanced build could, those guys ran the economy leaving anyone else that didnt adopt that playstyle in the dust, now with this new system if you try to bite more than you can chew you get punished, 1 portal is perfectly fine as long as the 1 shots are kept in check for actually balanced builds.
The only place 1 portal needs to be changed is for pinnacle/mechanic bosses, people need to learn their mechanics and 1 portal is not gonna do it, especially when the entry costs are so high that most people will instead sell their invitations.

Spoiler: The oneshots will never be balanced.
So if they keep this 1-portal garbage then the game will suffer for it.
Also the economy is already cooked in this test league lmao people still run MF group maps because that's the best way to make currency not whatever thing you could do solo in PoE 1. 6 portals doesn't have this huge effect on the economy that you think it does.

Make each portal cost 20% of an XP bar. If you have <20% the map is gone.
