Tier rankings are backwards...Why?
Yea this has been a confusion on GGG's side the whole time. I don't think they've ever heard and understood the explanation.

" Or you just won't need to and will be able to look it up like we had been doing with PoE 1 for more than a decade lol. This post was sponsored by me.

" I've literally never looked up how many tiers there are, because I know T1 is the best. I don't care if there are 5 or 15 tiers of garbage below that. |

" Well instead of reversing the tiers, since the current system might be better for future development (easier to add new tiers then shift everything around to make new tier 1s) we could just ask them to maybe highlight the mod in bold, or give it a slightly diff color, if the tier of the mod is the highest the item could roll. Seems to solve the problem, plus imo it would be better when quickly sorting through tabs of loot and figuring out what to trade/vendor/craft etc, since it would stand out as you hovered over items. |

" Seems completely reasonable and a good idea to me. This post was sponsored by me.

Having bold/highlighted text for the highest tier does not solve the problem of having to go to a wiki or other website. For mods that have many tiers, especially those with small increments to the ranges, I'd want to know if I've hit the second or third highest tier. Imagine rolling for phys damage on bows, etc.
I can understand why the numbering has been reversed to make it consistent with other numbering within the game, so have little hope of it being reverted. With that in mind the next best solution would be to list the max tier along side it. |

" People are making fun of this without understanding what it says. When you start looking at affix tiers instead of affix numerical values, 99.99% of the time it is because you want the highest tier there is. If they add a new tier in the future, you still want the highest. This has nothing to do with adding more tiers in the future, it is not affected at all. There are some cases where you might want the second highest tier, or the highest tier you can afford, this is still better with the old system as what you are really looking for is how many tiers you are from the top. Then there is the fact that not all mods in the game have the same amount of tiers, that alone should be enough (unless this is different in PoE2, but I imagine that would be way more cumbersome for balancing). As for consistency with other numbering in the game, it doesn't apply here either. Stuff like skill gems (and I guess maps but I am not at maps yet), you compare from the bottom up, and it is important to know the level/tier you are using from the start of the game. With mod affixes, you compare from the top down, as explained, and early on you care about the affix value, not the actual tier. You typically care about the actual tier of the affix when you are endgame crafting. And as far as I can tell, lower level skill gems don't even drop as you progress. So these are very different use cases, best served by a different tier system. |

Saying “I want the second highest tier” and “I want the highest tier I can afford” are two different things. The latter makes sense but why would you ever specifically want the second highest tier?

" That´s the sane solution, right? If it´s 10-1 or 1-10 doesnt matter as long as you know it´s 10 (and can count to 10). |
