Do defences even matter anymore?
" right, agreed. jsuslak313 is talking sense too. the guy specced out of his build into a glass cannon and says he enjoys the game more. a lot of melee just doesnt do enough damage. I actually do use evasion on my jug because having good armour + entropic avoidance for all attack damage on top is a lot more beneficial in practice than getting a gigaton of armour. block is there, no entropy so not quite as good as evasion but its there. at what cost tho? yeah, the defences are there for a marauder type build but by the time you have specced into them what is your damage like? if you dont have extreme gear its probably terrible, block eats so many points. I kind of agree with the op to some extent. you can get around the problem by just having stupid levels of gear that no one realistically has and sticking to skills with a reasonable level of aoe. but if you just have normal dude gear by the time youve invested in all this shit most of the time your damage on a melee build like that is gonna be so bad. ive been watching nugi a bit recently and hes in softcore playing some broken as hell wander bolt build, its like server stability shaking levels of projectile return nonsense. his damage is probably up in the 100s of millions and he dies about 5 times an hour, but hes enjoying himself and running good content. i dont wanna misrepresent his thoughts, but hes mentioned why hes not on hardcore and hes talking about the builds just being boring as fk because you HAVE to stack all the mitigation in the world and then you have no dps, and youre still gonna get killed by stupid shit regardless because everything is just so high damage now. it probably is just more fun to go glass cannon, kill stuff, die many times per hour but whatever, at least you are playing the game and not hating your life. the op is probably right. defences work, but unless you are baller rich is there any point in using them? theres a lot of skills and build types in the game where by the time you have invested enough to be tanky you do so little damage your game feels like shit and you are taking 10x more damage because you cant instakill stuff so you still die anyway. i think its a valid question. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :) Last edited by Snorkle_uk#0761 on Dec 20, 2023, 3:29:43 AM

" I was ranting about this topic for 2 years, especially because GGG solution to the matter is not to tame damage scaling for both players and monsters. Instead they make more content where dying once means automatic failure, or make existing content like lab more mandatory. From what I hear new league mechanic must be played deathless-only too. |

" Lol I can't believe that point still isnt hitting home after three responses... But truth be told, the defenses WOULD work, as chickenwink points out, which lends credibility to the fact that perhaps the OP didn't even have these basics in the initial build. |

Random one-shots from off-screen that are never really explained is just POE being POE. You can improve your odds, but the chance of being one-shot from off-screen is never zero. If you're playing a slow, low damage, tanky build then the mobs one-shotting you from off-screen probably have higher damage but lower defense than the things which will off-screen one-shot a glass cannon, because for a glass cannon they need more defense to survive being off-screened themselves, but much less damage to kill the glass cannon in one-shot, whereas for a tanky build they just need more damage to overcome the mitigation. That's called "balance".
As for damage avoidance such as block, while that might make you feel tankier by making the one-shots more infrequent, that kind of defense is never 100% so it's effectiveness in defense is just luck that eventually runs out, because again, the chance of being one-shot from off-screen is never zero in POE. Fairgraves was a slave trafficker specialized in the kidnapping and transport of children. He was not "a good man".

Game is way more playable as a glass cannon than any kind of zdps it isn't even close, defences are a luxury provided by either wealth or skill choice not really anything required to have fun.
They do work though and personally I get a great deal of satisfaction from the occasional character that is really tanky rather than passably so. |

" DPS will always be the primary requirement for any build in PoE no matter what. If you only have tank but no DPS you'll just have a bad time. You take longer to finish maps, thus make less currency, find less items, and fall behind more. Builds that can make currency faster will always be favored in such an economic view, so going full tank is almost always ill-advised. Edit: I should add that this isn't something you can change either. It's the nature of how the game works The opposite of knowledge is not illiteracy, but the illusion of knowledge. " Well they COULD change it....drastically increase the drop and crafting rates or offer an easy/single player mode with single player-oriented rates. The real problem of dps ALWAYS outperforming defense is that every single little upgrade past a certain point takes eons of farming. Cut down that time and that will drastically improve build diversity on its own. |

" It's not that the point didn't hit home. It's that there are some trolls regularly cruising the forums, either out of the goodness of their heart for GGG or just because it's fun to kick people when they are down and come here to rant. If anyone wanted to constructively analyze or critique whatever his previous defenses were, they would have asked first. |

" technically if you can delete everything in the game quickly, you reduce the need of defences only matter if you get attacked. also maven kinda solidified the need for dps. if you're tanky but not uber levels of tankiness, you will have a bad time. you need dps to quickly burst all the bosses before they all appear simultaneously and become a problem. " " If you look very closely, the OP edited their post shortly after several comments that responded to something completely different. They edited their post to say another thing entirely to cover their ass. They have since edited their post yet again as well. They did this to make it seem like they said something that they originally did not. To get... lets just say ignorant... people on their side. It doesnt take much of a detective to figure out what was said before hand either. Please before inserting ourselves into conversations that we actually understand what was said prior to posting. Or you can just ignore all that and start calling others trolls. Pretty ironic. Mash the clean Last edited by Mashgesture#2912 on Dec 20, 2023, 10:14:50 PM
