Experience loss driving some players away?

I've got it, guys. This is what we need to do.

Instead of taking away 15% XP from a player when they die, we need to add the same amount of experience to the XP for next level. (This won't let them get from their next level to the one after that sooner.)

This has two pleasant effects:
  • When someone who's halfway to next level dies, it doesn't look like they drop to 35% of a bar, it looks like they drop to 43.4% of a bar. It's less visible! Less QQ threads as a result. Mission accomplished.
  • Smarmy bastards who think they can death-zerg because they just gained a level still get penalized. And they'll barely notice!

When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

Situations when I one-shot die by Kole having 30k+ armor makes me against the death penality. To hell with it. Sometimes i'm in 19/20 way to get another level and than BUM! Kole, few deaths in a raw and i'm back in the first place... Add to this a discconetion problems which are not my or my internet provider fault but ggg server fault.

Death penality sucks a lot. Not because the Kole itself but lag/sync issues.

Sorry for my english.
LoL has no XP penalty, maybe better game for you guys
Why you should try Harcore http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/209310/page/1

I've got to agree that i find the xp penalty extremely frustrating in merciless difficulty.

It is very frustrating as a melee character to log in, and then log out with negative progress made xp-wise after an hour or so.

While i approve of the mentality behind making the game more 'hardcore' - as a hardcore gamer myself, i cannot agree that this mechanic actually makes the game more difficult: it simply emphasises lack of risk-taking, meaning lets go back to docks and even there we should avoid dog packs.

I honestly do not think it adds to the game: and it is the number one reason why i quit the game, and do not open it on the next day.

Negative progress is anathema to RPGs.

Funny, I always feel as if my experience is penalized whenever I play that one

Another point to bring up relative to the fundamental flaw with the existing penalty system is as you progress and become more powerful, you take fewer risks. This amounts to less fun. When you hit 85+ you no longer do crazy fun things; instead you play it safe in everything you do. No more leaping into rooms, going after certain bosses for fun, or venturing to areas (or doing maps) that have tough mobs and mods.

This takes away from the gaming experience, and funnels high level players into safe and boring mode. There is no adventure anymore. This is a big problem.

QFT, 15% IMO is too much. Especially when you hit 88+

Lets face it hardcore players are NOT COMMON. You have to look at it like capitalism because after all, thats what runs the economy inthis game. Tailor to the hardcore players, you won't get the masses. Tailor to the more casual ones and you will have a bigger player base.

This game is already hardcore in the way its insanely hard to get those high lvl maps and the insane amount of currency you have to roll to "play it safe" while still raise the chances for a map drop. This discourages ALOT of players once they reach the end game

And a bigger player base, Sry aiming for one makes for better games right? So you change a game for a particular audience into a Game for a bigger audience = win for the game?

Well they tried this for example with Dead Space 3 and now the franchise got closed. And its by far not the only one that got killed this way.

That's nonsense.

PoE has different leagues. Adjusting softcore mode won't affect the hardcore players AT ALL. I don't understand why they even bother to join discussions about softcore adjustments.

Hardcore players get new leagues who are even harder than normal hardcore. Softcore players play to mid 80s until they recognize that gaming sessions can actually make your character worse than where it started and rage quit the Path of Frustration.

One mere example, but look at WOW, prolly still has untold playing to this very day. Mind you I could never play a game like WOW. But every business, and this game is a business, should tailor to the largest audience possible in order to ensure they stick around for a long time.

15% is alot, yes I am aware they already lowered and if we're going to sit around listening to hardcore players dictating how a game should be its the equivalent of a restaurant making the spiciest food possible and ONLY the spiciest food possible and utterly refusing to change this because their "fanbase" mocks those who can't handle extremely spicy food. Think that restaurant is going to last long tailoring to their "elite little clique"?

The whole point of an RPG of any type is to feel a sense of accomplishment. This all but comes to a halt in the end game. Not just exp wise, but in orb drops, map drops etc. The fact that orbs are used for currency instead of crafting should say something. They are currently out of balance, eg since March I've seen about as many regals dropping as I have exalts, which is not many.
