is diablo 3 worth buying?

If you don't mind being forced to purchase gear in order to progress in inferno then sure.

Blizzard did their best to turn D3 into another cash cow for themselves, and they did a good job.

While I am enjoying the game, the intent of the difficulty scaling is quite obvious. In order to progress in Inferno you must have the highest tiers of gear available, which you will not find ones that are suitable for your own character. Due to this you are forced into using the AH to buy gear for your character if you want to continue to progress. Not a fan of the loot progression / difficulty scaling at all. This is not a whine, I have a solid build, great gear and can solo A1 and a bit in A2 inferno, but this is only because I buy gear and I understand that this is the only way that it is possible for me to succeed without a team farming for me.

The problem with the AH is that far too many people thing "it's there, therefore I have to use it." You are not required to use it at all. Ever. Not in Normal, not in Inferno, not when playing solo and not when playing in groups. Even worse, many people I know ran right to the AH as soon as they got the chance, bought the best gear they could find and have then complained non-stop that they can't find better gear. How does that make any sense?

Diablo 3 isn't a bad game. But like any other games, it is what you make of it. Want a dark, moody atmosphere while running around? Play this (instrumental) song in the background:

Dimmu Borgir - Sorgens kammer (translation: Chamber of sorrows)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDeQI949nIA

(yes, Dimmy Borgir is the biggest black metal band here in Norway, and one of the biggest there is. But this song is mostly just on piano.) ;)

Want the best gear possible? Search the AH every day, all day. Want to find your own stuff? Ignore the AH completely. Want to solo everything? You can. Want to play co-op the whole time? You can. Want to mix it up? Guess what? Now you can. All characters are online only, so you don't need to seperate co-op and solo characters. Want to play a female barbarian or male wizard? You can.

All in all, you can do a lot in Diablo 3 if you want to. The question is what you want from the game. Or to alter 'that' JKF-speech a bit: "Ask not what the game can do for you, but what you can do for the game."

GL on Inferno without buying gear.

It's supposed to take weeks of farming to reach Inferno. Patience is a virtue.

Farming Hell items will do nothing to help you compete in Inferno from what I have seen. Of course I do have notoriously bad luck, so this could be my problem.... anyway I have been farming Act 1 inferno for about a week while intermittently running friends through hell difficulty. Nothing I have found would be worthwhile for my character, I have had to buy everything to make my character viable. Again this could just be my horrible luck.... yet to find a unique or set too whereas everyone I play with has found multiple.

No, it's not. It's really smart. Online connection and server dependent gaming is the one true "delay" to game-cracking.

Look at it now, a week has passed and no pirated version.

Lol. It is more expensive to support the game and servers than you'll get money from people that would pirate the game, and most of them will anyway not buy the game.

Blizzard never had problems with pirates, becouse good games will always sell a lot. Online connection is becouse of RMHA.
I hate to contribute to the thread of a game I willingly know very little about, but...what is the point of 'farming' if I have my credit card handy? Or is RMAH scouring just a new form of farming?

This is an honest question and should not be used as a springboard for another RMAH bitchfest. I just want to know if there is still incentive to 'farm' if I can just buy all my gear.
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.

The point of farming is that you can because you don't have the money to buy items.

The point of a RMAH is so Blizzard can profit from third party gold farmers and stuff like that. It's not FOR the players, it's for making money.

Yeah, I understand that. But...look, I might have had a bit of cash to spare for GGG. That was a one-off thing. If I were really THAT well off, I'd be doing something far more exciting than posting here all the time!

So I have an okay job. I'm doing alright. The point of that is, as a fairly average dude of my age financially (income-wise, let's stick to that), I probably make enough in one day to fully kit out a character that would take me months of farming to complete.

...So while farming is still viable and good for folks who for whatever reason cannot invest financially in their chosen hobby, is it viable or even worth it for someone who can afford to put a hundred bucks into his favourite hobby? My instincts say no.

As for the RMAH and its function to Blizzard, come on, we've discussed that at great length elsewhere.

I merely wanted to know, in all honesty, with all humility possible, if I have *any* reason to play D3 the same way I play PoE and played TQ, D2, etc etc. With that compulsion that the NEXT drop might be what I really want...
