Shredding and freezing whole screen while Cycloning at 100+ movement speed.
That's something best melee builds or selfcast can't do regardless of investment.
"even if they threw a round 50% more damage buffs around. Nobody would care."
I really doubt that.
You do realize that, no matter how much more damage they give melee, you'll never get the playstyle of that Icespear build on something like Heavy Strike right? It's not a matter of damage at this point.
Even if GGG were to change Heavy Strike in a way that actually enabled this kind of playstyle, by the time they do, it won't be melee anymore. It would be something akin to Lightning or Flicker Strike who can already do similar things.
I honestly don't get what exactly it is you want. You clearly don't consider something melee because it has a melee tag (COC Cyclone would be melee if you were to see it from that perspective), so you are talking about some definition of "real melee" here but you use something like this as a benchmark that "real" melee skills should be able to reach. Imo that's a contradiction. By definition you can't have "real" melee that blows up screens. It's one or the other.
I could understand people who just feel like melee could need a bit more damage, or those who want some of the kinks, like base attack speed and targeting fixed. But none of that would do anything to get it any closer to those top meta builds it is always compared to so nothing would change at the end? I mean if that is the kind of playstyle you are looking for, would you actually bother playing Heavy Strike if it got 50% more base damage and 10% more base attack speed?
I just roughly tested MY melee build i planned to play this league. It's hot garbage.
This feels like paper thin. First map i entered, Burials with damage mods, Rare two taped me 3x in the row. Ok, bad combo...
Let's try Mino with Guardian's Aid and damage mods. They demolished me.
People complained that melee this league was particularly bad but this is beyond bad.
Even 100% more damage wouldn't compensate for the defenses you need to have to survive being in the face and bashed constantly.
I've taken a shot at making a Wild strike raider in PoB, and it looks like it is close to being viable:
https://pastebin.com/0fi1ZKuX
The planned buff to Wind Dancer would help this a lot since with it, it might get the 95 % evade chance after being hit or something close enough; and the buff to spell suppression nodes will make it easier to cap it (pov doesn't have it, but it has items that I didn't spend much time finding on trade), so I can get better rares in terms of other stats.
It also runs six uniques - paradoxica, saviour, starkonja's, darkray vectors, mark of the elder and darkness enthroned, so if the unique buff turns out to be meaningful and hit most of those, then this might even be playable.

Add Atlas keystone: Monster density decreased by A LOT but monster HP is also increased by A LOT and they are more dangerous. Of course they would drop as much as a normal map would have.
Viola you created a Game mode for skill gems without built in screen wide AoE. And you know what is the best, since it is a Atlas passive it is your own choice.
I think that's an awesome idea. Builds that require on kill effects certainly won't like it, but they can avoid the node.
Thanks for all the fish!

This doesn't look good tbh.

stop saying random ignorant things, like "oh i dont know how to fix it, this is so hard bouhou" look at numbers.
the only thing you cannot fix if you dont want to turn every melee into huge aoes or into flicker strike is the mechanical advantage, but few persons cares, they just want to play melee.
now numbers.
attack speed damage lvl 20 gems
ground slam 0.9 188 50% at close range 253% aoe included
heavy strike 0.85 313 40% dd 372% no aoe
heavy strike with 1 jewel 60% dd 425% no aoe
spectral helix 1.1 250 double hit on boss 550% full screen aoe
spectral helix has a full screen aoe, 110% as for a nice feeling early on of the skill and does 30% more damage than heavy strike with a specialised jewel with the limited number of jewel slots we have nad this thing is called HEAVY strike and some forumers are telling me "oh i dont know what they can do to make it more playable, really NOONE knows, it s so hard"
what a joke.
now if you include the totems that you have to drop, ancestral protector is 20% more attack speed, only the warchief is melee. and you must have a multiple totem setup or vaal warchief and drop it and at this point with the jewel and the ancestral warchieft(20%) with HEAVY strike you re still doing less damage than spectral helix. lol ?
anyway i will soon stop bothering since it s the way they balance their game, so be it.
and btw, the tree, left bottom side is all attack damage or attack damage with melee weapons, not melee attacks so you dont get some magical scaling with melee skills.
people are playing spectral helix ? whyyy really it s inexplicable. noone can understand. let me call some fields medal in mathematic, maybe he can explain us but not so sure.

one good fix would be to rename heavy strike into "wet noodle strike", that would take them even less time :)

What human being uses " Duel Strike " & doesn't have their ears bleeding?
I'd rather listen to a broken elevator.
Wrote 10 paragraphs about dual strike sounding like garbage, for over a year now, & nothing. Art feedback subforum useless.
Same goes for some of the " Blade " skills, like who thought screeching metal, was a good sfx? Obviously isn't.
100 people towns with hang out fields. Witcher taverns. Free hair style options. IRO War of Emperium gvg map.

Wait, so 4% buff to Glacial Hammer dmg and 2 to Radius of Cleave didnt fix the melee?

The fix is coming. New skill gem. Glacial Cleave which will give melee a new S tier skill. Done.

Solution: Carry out a routine balance pass on a selection of underperforming skill and support gems, with the aim of making them more attractive options.
Resulted in:
"
Cleave now has +0 to Radius at gem level 1 (unchanged), up to +10 to Radius at gem level 20 (previously +8).
"
Reave now has 170% Effectiveness of Added Damage at gem level 1 (previously 150%), up to 250% at gem level 20 (previously 225%). Vaal Reave now has 250% Effectiveness of Added Damage at gem level 1 (previously 200%), up to 350% at gem level 20 (previously 313%)
"
Sunder now has 220% Effectiveness of Added Damage at gem level 1 (previously 175%), up to 325% at gem level 20 (previously 275%). Its damaging wave now travels 60% faster.
Those are some incredible buffs. Those options are looking really "attractive".
I was actually expecting them to actually do some real changes to a dying archetype this league, but they yet again show that they have no clue about the overall state of melee.
I might actually be sitting this one out. This is just a joke at this time.
SO i waiting you play using cleave build now. Good luck in this job.
I actually played fire conversion cleave in a HCSSF private league and it was fine for all map tiers. I died because I did a dumb thing in a Black Star fight, so that was sad. I didn't exactly carry it over to Gauntlet though xD

Define fine. Because "it could kill stuff" doesnt make skill fine.
