Steam Controller immediately disconnects on selecting controller (beta) option

I have a steam controller plugged in, I can use it to control other things etc. When I select the controller option in the input menu, the top right immediately says "controller disconnected" and it switches back to keyboard and mouse.

Well that's pretty damn stupid. Shouldn't have advertised it as a PC Controller beta then, since it's locked to one specific type of controller.

I play via standalone, not steam.

I am on steam, using a wireless Xbox 360 controller which is supposed to be an XInput controller. It works fine for No Man's Sky and Steam recognizes it. It immediately disconnects on selecting controller (beta) option.

How do I know if my controller is xinput or not?

A quick google search said that these are XInput controllers:
* Xbox 360 Controller
* Logitech F310 Gamepad
* Logitech F710 Gamepad
* Sony Dualshock 3

But otherwise I wouldn't know how to tell.

2- Properties..
3- CONTROLLER
4- Disable Steam Input
