Chris Wilson's vision explained: slowing down the game by enforcing zoom zoom play

Chris Wilson's vision of the game:

Problem: Players stop playing after some weeks into the league - loss of potential cash.

Solution: Reduce general drop rates and implement highly rewarding content which rewards "zoom zoom play" way more than slower play. Also make sure this content is considerably harder than the map itself. This ties players to (otherwise highly unrewarding) low tier content for longer, where they oneshot everything, so that they reach red maps much later and will play the game for longer and likely spend more money (slowing down).
To support this, withhold overdue QoL changes, leaving them as a markting joker that can be given to players in slices once they are unhappy with the game.

outcome
Spoiler
Me seing the vast amount of tedious work in front of me, quitting the game even earlier. Didn't have fun, no money spent.

I honestly see a lot of the problems being a lack of communication about what defenses and damage we need to start doing things like maps. Like We get 4-links in the campaign so the campaign is geared around that level of damage, but mapping just feels awful until you are way overleveled and overgeared.

Even players that know a lot about the game don't really understand when to move to yellow maps from white maps, a lot of them just trade league straight into red maps. So GGG tries to slow everyone down. They do this so people don't get bored of the endgame, despite players skipping most of it. The players that don't trade and don't skip content get kneecapped over and over in this weird grind of doing the same challenges, but never getting more powerful, while the people they try and slow down get faster and faster.

I feel like most of the playerbase don't make it to maps (hell a majority of players stop in act 1 if they die to stupid instakill mob packs), and of those that do most stop at yellow or tier 6ish. At this point they will have killed each conqueror like once, done maven like 4ish times, and all the game offers them at this point is more maven, more conquerors. It is very easy to imagine a build that doesn't use any items from mapping to this point. It would be slow, it would be rippy. These kinds of players would be a third of the way through the endgame could have received nothing as a reward, except an atlas getting more tanky, maven passives that are very dangerous, and some random influence items that they most likely can't even use. This is why people stop, they don't get any rewards, or at least any worthwhile ones.

This is why, to me, Chris's vision of the game sucks. It doesn't have any reward or any real challenge, just tedium. It is grinding just to grind. And the worst part is until they remove trade it will always be skippable.
I wish that GGG would give guides for each skill gems through the acts, that way we players could see what they aim for regarding defenses versus attack power.

This would give us an understanding of the 'vision'.
Are we still discussing this?

Yes, Chris HAD a vision. A vision that was shattered with all the whales, a.k.a streamers complaining, when the nerfs hit last league. After that the vision suddenly changed. Chris thought he had a vision, in reality it's just a business like any other. Supply and demand, and "zoom zoom" play is in high demand.
League is made with zoom zoom boom boom in mind but the difficulty is ramped up/mobs are on crack and obtaining the most rewards is done in quite specific ways. Is no surprise some complain because they die all the time or dont get showered in loot during the campaign. You want power creep well here it is lmao.
meh, it's still one the best leagues to date and they finally got smart and added new powerful uniques, which makes the game feel more exciting. I never understood why they didn't want to have anything other than a headhunter for so long. It really does make the game more exciting and addicting.
I was never a fan of corruption; not a fan of a league based on it.

Best league how?

Surely you dont mean the new flask belt...

Funny.
There was never a "vision" as Chris described it. You don't have a vision and do the opposite of your supposed vision 30 times in a row.

There was psychological calculus done that determined that if GGG made the treadmill more obnoxious then people would play longer and spend more money. That's why the difficulty spike of 3.15 and 3.16 happened. No reason other than that.

Ironically Mageblood goes against the "vision" of all of the PoE devs (except for Chris) and Mageblood is 90% of the reason anyone is still playing the league.

because it's fun, extremely rewarding and ya new chase uniques make it more exciting...

and ya, the new flask belt and stasis prison, squire and that amulet. New powerful uniques are "exciting" and I hope they continue adding them to the game. It gets old just chasing yet another headhunter every league.

It does take a while to get to the fun part but once you do it's fun. The only issue is that I'm on console and they seriously make you press the button that shows filtered ground loot to use the league mechanic. Even with cancer like that, it's still good enough to put up with such nonsense.
