Someone please ask Chris Wilson this on his next community interview:
" Crashing the client won't help as the game state resides on the server. Whatever signal (probably the peer being disconnected) can be used in any way - 5 seconds more game state (without your input) or just ending it. I believe that as long as there is the logout option - noone is really playing hardcore. The no-logout challenge was the real hardcore. And the game is not meant for that. To make a game like that would require a lot of tweaking and tuning to keep every battle 'fair'. But if you do that, you can't deliver so much content and just put it in. They made their choice a while back. Now they will spend some time cleaning up the results of applying their strength. They've been too rigorous. It's like sitting on blisters. The reduced income of the expedition league is a partial pay of the debt built up over some years. This debt was always there, but never showed on the balance sheet. Did you try turning it off and on again?

I for one have never logged out to avoid death.
It's pure cheese. Definitely should be removed. |
|
" I only mean that Chris Wilson has been heard to say that they don't want to punish the player for crashes or disconnects and that is what they would have to do in order to prevent logout from saving you. |
|
" If they would allow game state to continue it would be absolutely punish players for a DC/crash, he's right on that and so are you. Have to mention though, it's not a closing system. There's been many (hundreds) of instances shown in streams that people who DC can still lose their character, their map, etc. Then there's the point of the frequency of needed logouts - they could be kept to a minimum. By now that courtesy I think has made way for freedom of explosions and wtfs. It's hard to describe the process that turns a restaurant into a soup kitchen, sometimes. Did you try turning it off and on again?

Right, I only know it's a reason he's given for not removing it. It's obviously far from perfect.

" Imagine thinking D4 poses any kind of threat to POE. Let's be real, it'll be hot shit at launch because it's new, but I guarantee that'll die off quickly. Blizzard couldn't make a good game if their lives depended on it. And D2R doesn't count because they didn't develop it. |

+1
Please and thank you I have never felt further from what I know and love

" Yeah, it's soooooo much better to inexplicably die from an offscreen mob. Or lag into a group of mobs and die before you can even hit a movement ability to get out of them. |

I actually expected local fangirls to be against this and say stuff like "hurr durr everything is perfect" but I'm nicely surprised, seems like this suggestion is popular even among those.
It would be really welcome change, and streamers defending why they use macro log-out to avoid stuff like bosses where you can not portal out as not cheating are really cringe. You can not portal out for reason in those, you may not agree with said reason and find it "too challenging" but then simply do not go do those specific bosses instead of cheating. It is not like someone is forcing you to do maven, uber elder or whatever else disables portal out. Also those fights are easy to do even with low-end dps, because they are so mechanic heavy. You can just dodge pretty much everything. hardest mechanic is "memory game" where i admit that i failed few times but i did not log out, i died and lived with it. It is game, it did not kill me irl. And if you play hardcore only to never die, you are missing a point of hardcore. Sure you can just use macro cheat to log out automatically when you take 1 or more damage and have like 12k es dodge build with reduction to first hit received. Avoid anything hard and never die, but did you not pick hardcore to be challenged? I feel like people pick hardcore for idea of challenge but then avoid actual challenge at any cost. And that is fine, if someone enjoys that let him have at it, but do not balance the game around COWARDS. I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty, and witty and gay, And I pity Any girl who isn’t me today! | |

I don't think you are really being fair to hardcore calling it cheating when the game cheats way harder by design. Challenge =/= unreactable death. Playing careful and taking every encounter seriously because of the stakes can be fun, having many hours worth of work flushed because you flipped a coin and got tails is probably not what people dream of with the hardcore experience.
I don't think it's cheating, if I had the stones to gamble my enjoyment of the game on not getting ended by things outside my control I'd probably have to use logout macro too. I don't like dying in softcore, I feel like enough of a failure every time it happens there and I don't have to reroll every time. We just want to be able to react to the game because it's a game and we are supposed to play it, meaning we should be rewarded for doing it right and not punished anyway.
