It is part of the Core Game and critical because GGG balance Drop Rates around the Economy. They say themselves that drop rates would be lowered if they made an Auction House, for example. I wish that this Economy was a little bit more healthy.. but how to achieve that? Well, that's a different thread.
By the Way: The SSF League is *still* balanced around the Economy. It's a Restriction Players put on themselves. It's also a cop-out (What people usually wanted in an SSF League was a League balanced around, well.. SSF) to eliminate that big SSF Discussion Years ago.
This reply is off-topic:
A league or a mode where drops are balanced around SSF would probably mean that the majority will just treat this game as a singleplayer. All social interaction becomes redundant, guilds become pointless, trade league will lose a lot of players because of easier drops in SSF. Also no point in buying mtx because no one sees it anyway if you are playing in your cocoon.
Path of Exile should then have been a singleplayer from the get go instead of a multiplayer game it is now. What is the point to have a multiplayer if practically everyone plays solo? What I am trying to say is: 'Who signs up for a multiplayer game if he only plays solo?'

No, It's not critical. You still would be able to (and can) play the game without trading.
You can also play it with one hand.
I mean, come on. Of course you can.
Then it is one less thing that a new player needs to learn, or get involved into, in order to make the game work.
I mean, it's not a game mechanic. It's a feature. It's not essencial that you engage in trading to be able to play the game.
It's literally one of the five most important features of the game. The game was literally designed around trade.

Agree for the first Part - if we had a trade league and an easier SSF one I bet there would be more players in the latter. I'm not saying this needs to happen, just responding to "SSF exists so there's no balance around trading". Because there is. But one thing: SSF Players buy MTX all the same, maybe even more because they likely need more tabs. I want to see *my* Char, I don't care about others in Town. Not just my opinion, trust me.

I agree with OP but it's hard to convince new players, who are also new to ARPGs, to play the mode that erases their progress in 3 (or less) months. Everyone I've introduced to this game learns the error of their way eventually, so I just let them figure it out on their own

Why would I do that and how do you know that I don't care?

You may be right about OP and his threads. But was does Standard league offer to a completely new player, that Temp League doesn't?
I don't hate Standard, nor do I "look down on" standard players. I played standard for several years before jumping ships. But I really struggle to find a good answer to my question in my last paragraph. I firmly believe that temp leagues offer the best experience for new players; there's a loot explosion in every zone from level 1, there's more activity and trading is more accessible.
If said new player would like to continue his journeys in standard after the league, he's free to do so without any judgement.
(PS: Sorry for bumping a KMQ thread)

If the new player doesn't trade then it doesn't really matter where he starts.
If he does then it's best to start in the new league along with everyone else because drops are worth more in the first week or two and there are more players to trade with.
I played 1.0 and 1.1 in the leagues. Then treated Standard as the main game since 1.2 with maybe some casual play in the league at the league starts.
You can also play the league a few days to improve your Standard experience. eg. Master missions carry over from the league to Standard. So what I do is race to maps at league start, then buy and run a red map. Then all I have to do is log in once a day to get master missions in both the league and Standard.
Since 3.13 there are also Maven passives which gets you 2 master missions a day. So I raced to maps, then grinded for a day until my build could run and kill the 4 Breachlords and then beat The Hidden to get the central atlas passive for 2 master missions a day. So for only 2 days of play in the league, I will get about 180 red master missions for each master transferred to Standard at the end of the league.
