Of course Shagsbeard is correct but the question asked was not really what I'd consider the best question to ask. A much more interesting question to get the answer to would be:
17 tries for something at 1:500 per try, what is the chance of at least one hit? Now it's been about 46 years since my probability class but I think it would simply be the probability of not getting the HH from 17 tries subtracted from 1. 1 - (499/500)**17 Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! That is correct. You could also compute it the "hard way":
C(1,17)(1/500)^1(499/500)^16 + C(2,17)(1/500)^2(499/500)^15+ ... + C(17,17)(1/500)^17(499/500)^0. Only the first two terms will affect much of any approximation for this. Last edited by Shagsbeard#3964 on Mar 27, 2021, 7:54:55 PM
