How do people play Casters in this game ?
|
I have tried it several times now and have failed catastrophically with each attempt.
I mean with melee/attack builds you can easily just face-tank a whole screen without worrying about anything with very little skill involved. But with caster, you have all these additional concerns like mana pool, stun disruption, lack of stun immunity, lack of close range defence, wind-up time on spells and gearing in general. I may be wrong but the philosophy behind caster playstyle as I see it is to be inherently squishy, but do massive damage to account for that- though I can't even get the superior damage component out of these types of builds. So I'm left with an extremely volatile character with anaemic damage. One other aspect that still eludes me is that attack builds have loads of flexibility and so are typically very forgiving to play. You don't need to follow a build closely at all to get a viable character, whereas all the caster builds I try have to be followed to the letter and rely on very specific items, And also seem to require the most investment. I just wanted to make this thread in part because I feel so defeated having failed again and also to pay respects to those that succeed in playing casters. My hats off to you guys, sincerely. I have never had any issues playing attack characters, even as a noob, but caster for me is infinitely harder, almost to the point it seems impossible. I'm Left of Right and far Right of Left. Well... they don't face tank.
They kill stuff before it kills them. It's a different playstyle, and I find it much harder to push your boundaries. If you're content playing content that your character can beat, you'll kill stuff a lot faster with a caster. If you are the type of player who is always trying stuff that's just a bit too hard for your character, melee is much more forgiving. Once your caster is geared up to take on T16+ areas without a problem, you'll beat your melee build easily. One major difference is that a caster gets a lot of power out of levels on their gems over 20. Their base damage comes from their skill, not from their equipment. Melee not so much. Base there is your weapon. If you can get a level 25+ spell working for you, you'll have a much easier time at it. Last edited by Shagsbeard#3964 on Feb 7, 2021, 8:15:17 AM

How you play melee? Its been 6 years in this game and everytime i try melee , i hate the game. The scalling is bad , from start to endgame , even this league i tried a cyclone with a 1k pdps axe and other gg gear ended with 200+ex investment and i was dying all the time . Meanwhile my archmage elementalist destroy everything and also tanks.Hell even my starter flamewall spellsinger did better

" Hmm it's funny how people can be so different with these things. I guess I've never had any issue with attack builds because you have many sources of leech and life on hit. So it's trivial to get yourself 3k leech per second even on a budget build. True that you have to sacrifice dmg for better survivability as melee/attack, but the sustain and ease of play seems to balance that out nicely, at least from my experience. I just don't understand how you sustain yourself as a caster. I tried MoM build but my mana goes from 4k to zero in 2 seconds so I am constantly running around in circles not being able to cast a spell lol. I'm Left of Right and far Right of Left. |

" this for me as well people have different playstyles. you prefer melee. thats fine. my buddy also prefers melee and says he can tank a whole screen. anytime i try to level up a duelist or marauder i end up quitting by lvl 50 because they feel like absolute PAPER to me. dying all the time. i'll only get pure hp and defense nodes and end up dying constantly because IMO getting hit every single time feels like garbage. i'd much rather play a raider, deadeye or whatever else and not get hit. i feel so much tankier and die FAR LESS then any other option. its just my preferred playstyle. this league i dumped like 40ex into a chieftain which on paper should be the tankiest thing i've ever played. i had 55% phys dmg taken as fire, 90% phys dmg reduction, 90% fire res, 80% cold/lightning, cap chaos res, 50% cold/lightning dmg taken as fire, arctic armour (13% less phys+fire dmg taken), fortify, and like 3k ish regen. he was tanky, but it felt like crap. and honestly i died on him still more often then on my toxic rain deadeye who is actually paper and can't take 2 hits in a row.....but i also don't. the most defensive aspect in this game IMO is mobility, and melee severely lacks that, and to me that feels like shit. knowing what you like is half the battle in enjoying this game. stick with what you know, stick with what you like. you'll appreciate your time here much more. |

They need to introduce you to the "melee sux" crowd who complain every patch how horrible melee is and at the same time exclude skills like cyclone, molten strike and earthshatter because they are not "true melee"

" Good post. It's not that I dislike caster playstyle I just seem to suck at it lol. Also I'm not referring to "Melee" specifically, it was more a comparison between Attack based builds and Caster, as Attack have lots of support from leech passives. That and for whatever reason almost ever damn item I find has Attack stats on it. I'm currently playing a WS/LS/FS Raider that I've spent maybe 100c on and she does up to t15 pretty well. I only really die to boss mechanics that I don't understand and rarely due to Ritual shenanigan's. As for melee I haven't tried that many, but pure physical life regen Cyclone has always been super easy to play. The thing I love about Cyclone is that you are never in one spot long enough for anything nasty to get to you. That and you have close to 100% dps uptime. Ultimately I just wanted to try something completely different to spice things up this league. But I already have so many Cycloner's at this point. Though I am seriously contemplating respecting my Templar as Cyclone yet again lol. I'm Left of Right and far Right of Left. |

I've had successes with both styles... ranged too.

cyclone is tough to beat. seems like all other melee skills fall by its side in comparison

" Cyclone is boring as all fuck tho. I played a lacerate glad to 99 last league before I got bored, and that shit was slapping everything. I'm fucking with the BB chief. . . feels like a middle ground between the two playstyles imo you get a good amount of life leach, regen, block, ailment immunity and with harvest you can make some decent gear without too much investment so you can get your DPS up. |
