Is the game still too complicated
" It has not gotten any simpler from beta. Not with any patch. They just keep adding stuff with little to no explanation other than announcements, expecting people to keep up. Take a year off and you will be completely lost. But as others say, as long as you are okay to follow someone else's build, you can get a good start and maybe learn how to change it to suit your style as you go. It is like learning to play the piano instead of learning how to play a game. You start by learning how to play stuff others have already made. If you want a good ARPG that is still in its beta phase, as PoE was when it was much simpler, go look at Last Epoch. Right it is the best other ARPG for people who want a game that is not too dumb but is also not solving build math. It has lots of classes and skills, and every skill has lots of modifiers. PoE is not a game for people who take time off. It is for people who do not play other games much at all. I am sorry. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between. I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. Last edited by Foreverhappychan#4626 on Dec 19, 2020, 6:35:31 PM

Complicated?

dont fucking touch it. If you quit because it was too complicated few years ago, you'll tear out your hair now.

I tend to agree with the people telling you run away if you left a few years ago because it was too complicated for you. It certainly has not gotten more intuitive with time.
The game mechanics require investment to learn. That's more true today than it was three years ago. If you are intent on trying it and don't want to spend too much time learning, my advice would be to learn one thing/build and deep dive into whatever that thing is. You won't be a master at everything, but you might just get good enough for that one thing and build out from there. But yeah, if (over)complicated minutia isn't your thing, time to move on. Thanks for all the fish!

" That's really good advice. Obviously part of you is still interested in playing or you wouldn't be here asking this question. You could pick one mechanic like 'blighted maps', make a character that's good at that, and only do those if you're willing to trade with other players. Profits should self sustain. |

The league content should honestly be your first priority in league.
If you're new or returning after a 3+ year hiatus, though, watch some vids to catch up on how the atlas works, how the economy works lately, and what skills the veterans are league starting with. Hafta admit this league is more complicated than some others and if I were just starting to play PoE this league I'd be in sorry shape. Again, either skip it until you have a build that can squeeze past kitava, or watch a lot of vids along the way. It's not like breach or legion or deli where "poke thing in map" "monsters and loot pop out" [19:36]#Mirror_stacking_clown: try smoke ganja every day for 10 years and do memory game

The game can be as complex or simple as you want it to be. I personally have only found one league to be complex and that was Synthesis. However even that wasn't difficult once you figured some basics out.
Now if you are playing leagues, they can be somewhat complex up front. Primarily because they are not generally explained well and they do expect you to figure things out. Standard is pretty basic and easy to do, if you don't like a lot of change. However since you have to keep a game fresh over 8+ years there is always going to be some changes. At the same time, the game was never meant to be as simple as some of the other ARPGs. It is both where the power and the complexity lies. It is a balance that is quite impossible to achieve. A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Dude with the current power creep, you can literally play the game without any knowledge of mapping/advanced itemisation and still do pretty well.
The advanced stuff is only if you want to do the last 10% of the content. The game is so easy compared to 5 years ago that is almost a snore fest. Last edited by lolerman#1964 on Dec 25, 2020, 3:53:28 AM

Once a player gains some knowledge they'll realise complexity is an illusion and PoE is simplistic, kill mobs level up spend skill points, beyond that there's no complexity. Systems like Syndicate are convoluted, sure but the core game is dumb.

When I first started playing a year ago I thought it was too complicated too, I was one of those players who alt f4d as soon as I saw the skill tree. Then I decided to give the game a chance, I took suggestions from people to use a league starter and now I have some knowledge a couple level 100s, know how to farm efficiently, have a guild, etc.
Like anything else in life, just keep practicing and everyday you will learn something new if you allow yourself to and thus make yourself a better player! Do not get discouraged it is worth the investment! ★ Forum Threads ★
