You can play the game at a number of different levels. Play the way you enjoy, and enjoy your time spent playing it. Don't expect the same results that a player with a different playstyle adopts.
But I do agree that the past year or two have added complexity. They want to add "value" to items. One way to do that is to make them inaccessible to people due to complexity. If I were you, I'd stick to playing standard. Come up with goals that are suited for that. Try to get one of each ascendancy to level 90. Something like that. You don't need to be the best of the best to do that. Last edited by Shagsbeard#3964 on Dec 19, 2020, 11:52:24 AM

current league is pretty simple. the more complicated stuff like synthesis and harvest wasnt added to the core game

It depends on the League mechanics. The latest League Heist doesn't seem complex at all to me and it's pretty straightforward. Meanwhile I'm still can't grasp Syndicate mechanics and too lazy to watch some guides.
I think the beauty of PoE is that you can go at your own pace and skip the content that you don't like or don't understand. You can learn the game inside out and make your own builds or you can copy someone elses's build, zoom zoom everything and collect shiny stuff. I'm probably somewhere in between, but still closer to zoom zoom. |

" Heist will, though. And I'd say it's as, if not more, complicated that playing Scrabble (Synthesis) or Farmville (Harvest). What OP should ask themselves is: What complex content can I completely skip in my playthrough? Heist could be one of these - just like Harvest Haters, pick up contracts and Rogue Markers and sell them - or hide them in Filter. Last edited by Maxtrux#0762 on Dec 19, 2020, 11:58:34 AM

" Speaking for myself here. I don't think it's as much a case of overcomplexity of play as much as an overabundance of content. I know that sounds odd, but this game really has too much to do at this point. For a new player it seems like it would be overwhelming to try and engage with it all. For a long-time player it just becomes tedious to engage with it all. I would say it's worth your time to jump in and see what you think. It's free after all. If it gets to seem like too much, just avoid engaging with the optional mechanics. If complexity of builds feel intimidating, maybe pick a beginner build guide to your liking from the class forums and start there for a playthrough. |

The game is VERY COMPLICATED for a new player.
It can be over whelming. I have created a build guide JUST FOR NEWBIES, to help them beat end game bosses, with little or no knowledge of the game. I it super cheap, needing just the currency you find along the way. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2883137 It is a minion build, so if you hate minions, try something else. IF...and I mean IF, you follow a newbie oriented build guide, this game is not that bad for a newbie. Note, not all guides are suitable for newbies, but they are out there, in case you hate minions and don't want to try mine. | |
"Even worse. Each league become worse. |

I personally feel that you have it all wrong. Your "newbie guides" have the wrong goals. You shouldn't be encouraging players to take the easiest route to the end. You should be encouraging them to play the game and develop skills that will allow them to beat the game with their own choices. Just being told an easy way to win is only going to make them feel cheap. Teach them how to play. Teach them to enjoy themselves regardless of how well they do. Teach them how to improve. But don't just show them a simple solution.

"I'm pretty sure there were builds you could copy/paste in 2013. If you want to add your own flavor to the builds you are playing, then yes, you still need the "excel" skills. In 2020 however, we also have "Path of Building" tool, which helps a lot with planning your builds without excel (eg. see how much dps you would gain if you'd use skill X over Y, if you'd refund some passive points and take another path, etc). Pretty much all 2020 builds have PoB links to allow you to check the equipment, skill tree, and setup that allowed them to reach the numbers they are presenting. |
