" The former should increase bleed damage but not the later. "Increased attack damage" doesn't work with bleed. To not be confused with "Attack skills deal % increased damage", which does work with bleed. Last edited by Krayken#1299 on Dec 7, 2020, 7:00:53 PM

Part of the confusion is that they changed DoT damage a while back, so some written information is obsolete.
I will try to make it clear. DoT damage, from bleeds, poison, ignites are based on the FLAT damage of the skill that caused them. (this is why + flat damage items are so good for DoT builds.) Then any specific modifiers go into effect. For bleeds, attack damage does NOT effect bleeds. Now, much has been written about "Attack skills deal % increased damage" While this sentence has the word ATTACK in it, the damage type that is referenced is "damage". The damage type "damage" works on ALL types of damage, including bleeds. The modifier in that sentence "Attack skills deal..." means that instead of working on absolutely all kinds of damage, it only works if the originating skill is an attack skill. So if the bleed was caused by an attack, it works on it. I hope this cleared things up. The wiki IS clear on what damage types work on bleeds. You just have to recognize the damage type correctly. | |
" You made it a lot more clear, thanks man. Just another question... how about "Increased damage with axe" or "Increased damage with one handed melee weapon". Would it affect bleed if the bleed is applied by an axe / one handed melee weapons? I ask because the keyword "Attack" isn't there. Thanks! Last edited by Krayken#1299 on Dec 8, 2020, 8:34:53 AM

" These affect just the hit damage. This is a buff © 2016

" Now, Torturo's answer is in line with my understanding of this topic, however, there is another topic regarding bleed modifiers where following questions and answer was provided: " Defiance notable states, "Attack skills deal 24% increased damage while holding a shield", which is in my understanding same as above and as such should not apply to bleed. Mark_GGG has said it does apply to bleed and I'm officially confused. Duh... Anway, Lion's Roar still does not affect bleeds. Edit after some testing in game: Apparently Defiance is a global mod that applies to attack hits and also bleed damage. This is different than weapon type modifiers that only apply to attack hit damage. How is this distinction made escapes me though. I wish GGG would clean up the mess on the skill tree and finally come with streamlined definition for all mods. Last edited by Baron01#3047 on Dec 8, 2020, 12:39:35 PM

I reiterate:
Look at the damage "type" in the mod description. Is it "damage" "attack damage" "minion damage" "elemental damage" etc. See if that "type" works on what you are doing, in this case bleed. Then look at any modifiers in the mod description sentence such as "...with attacks" or "with axes" or "with spells" and see if you are applying the damage with the appropriate method. That is all. " And where do you see this magical hint that will guide us to enlightenment? |

" The wiki lists what "type" of damage works on bleed. https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Bleed Damage Physical Damage Damage over Time Bleeding Damage Trap, mine, minion or totem damage modifiers will also affect the damage of bleed if it is applied by a trap, a mine, a minion or a totem respectively. Also, bleed is non-elemental ailment, so Damage from Ailments modifier will also affect the damage of bleed. Last edited by Odif#4251 on Dec 8, 2020, 9:33:20 PM

" Under which of those 4 listed categories falls Defiance with its mod "Attack skills deal 24% increased damage while holding a shield." I would guess it is the first one, damage, however, it is just me guessing. This is exactly what I was mentioning in my last post about GGG cleaning up their mess. There are way too many variations of mods and affixes that actually do the same or affect the same variable. Mind you, bleed builds are my staple and I often play them as league starters so I'm solid on what works for my build and what does not, however, the more I look into it, the more I get confused. |
