What part of using a flask macro or POE Overlay is cheating? Just curious as I'm also a long-time customer and would like to avoid being disciplined for things literally 95% of the playerbase is doing.
As an aside, I have not ever used any sort of macro for PoE.
A flask macro will either automate flask usage or will use multiple flasks with one key press which clearly violates their macro policy.
Edit: Typo

As far as I know, flask macro is banned on the grounds of 'multiple actions for one button press'.
And PoE Overlay is banned because it's a tool that 'directly interacts with the game during playing', so something like typing out the item properties into a tool that sits in the background to do a price check would be fine, but clicking on an item to get a price check is not.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

I knew it was against the rules and did it anyway. I am regretful about it and would never do it again. I also love Path of Exile.

Sorry man, you knew what was at stake, accepted the bet and lost. The first rule of recreational gambling is "never bet something you can't afford to lose", can't find much compassion in myself for those who break that rule, or respect for those that do it and then ask for their money back.
Think of it as a learning experience of sorts, I've seen courses that cost more and teach you less valuable things.

Yes, found what Bex wrote on reddit

I just checked with Chris, and he says the policy is the same as it has been for the last eight or so years: You may not run programs that interact with the Path of Exile game client. It's okay to run things that are entirely external to the game (i.e. they would work if run on a second computer because they don't need the game open, for example ones that read the client log files).
Edit: I asked one of our team members about this and the account locks related to the Overlay recently have been due to it "hammering the ever-living shit out of our website".
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

I've asked support directly about that app and this was their response:
"
In general, we do not encourage the creation or use of third-party tools because they provide advantages for players that use them. I'm afraid, due to the dynamics of our policies, we're unable to guarantee if a tool is allowed or would remain allowed in the future.
I would recommend refraining from creating or using any programs that automates or does more than one action with a keystroke or mouse click as well as anything that interacts with the game client to provide an advantage over other players or provide information that isn't normally visible.
Take from that what you will.

With their unclear policy and refusing to clarify what is allowed and what is not regarding tools they should absolutely issue warning first if that's not obvious botter.
Also there should be more transparency.
See World of Warcraft recent case who did it right with multiboxing, issuing a warning to everyone and giving them option to stop using it. Then those who decided to break it anyway were (rightfully) banned.

Stop spread misinformation, Poe Overlay users were locked because of bug which sent millions of requests to Trade API (which is certainly not normal behaviour). And they got their accounts back, which means that PoE overlay itself isn't considered a cheat.

Yeah, they mentioned that too in the quote, haven't seen a post that clearly says that the tool is allowed and their rules are pretty vague so I still wouldn't risk it. Anyway, that would mean he got banned just for flask macro then.
