you mean that software that runs in a background constantly consuming my hardware resources and trying to limit my activity on internet, always annoying me when I get a 'illegal' copy of software... then once every week impairs my pc for hour or two too look though all the data I have on it?

sound like the worse kind of virus you can get man...

forgot to add that it denies you permission to run it off, or even uninstall it...

You're doing it wrong, get Avast. You probably had to pay for the crappy one, which is also a mistake.
Who in there right mind thinks AVG is the best? Only the uninformed, uneducated, mouth breathers use that garbage program.

Avast is infinitely superior and far less of a hit on your system.

NOD32 is awesome but it isn't free.
Crafting doesn't exist in POE. Gambling does...and the house always wins.

Velocireptile - I LOL'ed. Which made me fart. I wish the office were empty right now :(

Hardlicker - I had to push the dog out of the way so I could get to the sexy quilt.
Firewalls can and do stop reverse connections, with one caveat. They have to be configured to do so.

Personally I think linking at all should be filtered from anything public ingame just to help discourage a lot of this spam. With a bit of regex wizardry(Have fun with that devs!) you could filter out urls and most common ways of beating url filters. I doubt it would be 100% effective, but it would be seriously disruptive to spambots.

Translated into something more a bit more civilized...

"I disagree. I believe that AVG is inferior."

Is that really so hard?

It's actually shorter and brings your point across in such a way that you look less like a "mouth breather".
Looks like someone missed their weekly meeting of Douchebag's Anonymous.

best antivirus is your brain... stop advertising shit btw.. your a mod after all

He's right though.

The weak point of antivirus programs is that anyone can whip up a virus in 5 minutes and distribute it, and it won't be in any antivirus databases. All AV programs use heuristics to try to determine when a program is trying to do virus-like things even if it's not in their database, so they can detect these threats, to a certain extent. But NOD32 is one of the only programs that really achieves really respectable detection rates at it.

I've been using the net extensively for over a decade and a half, been using antivirus programs almost all of that time, and in all of that time have never had one of my AV programs catch anything that was about to harm my computer. So, yes, the best way to avoid viruses is smart computing practices.

But don't kid yourself. MS windows is a very, very insecure OS, and choosing to forego protection on it is not wise. And many viruses transmit themselves via email from someone else's system, so even if you're careful, you could find yourself getting infected from an attachment you were sent by someone trusted, such as a parent or close friend.
I feel like we need a "Smokey the Bear" type mascot for this... "Remember kids, only YOU can prevent viruses, malware and keyloggers!"
Never wrestle with a pig. You'll only get muddy, and the pig likes it!

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience!

The way antivirus's generally work is they are always one step behind, they find large scale viruses and detect there commonly used code.

If it is new, or say i change everything around then it wont realize it is a RAT or simple keylogger..

Ok, so because the police will always be one step behind the bankrobbers, we should stop having police?

The best way to protect your computer will ALWAYS be a combination - use your common sense while browsing AND have an anti-virus installed.

No, best way to be safe is to learn to differentiate a shady website from a trusted one, and to know when your facebook/email friend is infected.

Frankly, if your friend sends you an email about penis growth pills, you'll know something is wrong unless you asked your friend to send you an email about penis growth pills. Downloading any email attachement YOU DO NOT EXPECT is a super bad internet practice.

Antiviruses never helped me, never removed virii when I had one, and I had to remove those by hand. At one point, you just say fuck it, and do it by hand. You can do what your antivirus does for you, that is, filter what content you see on the net and delete viruses yourself.

If you need an antivirus, you need to review your internet practices.

Having one is an -okay- option if you don't know how interwebs works, but RELYING on one to protect you is stupid. That's what they sell you. They get you into trusting it when it is not a trustable way to protect yourself.

Like I said, you shouldn't need someone else to tell you a girl is shady and you should avoid her. Same deal with programs, identifying threats yourself and not opening those is the only good way to protect yourselves.

If you open these shady programs relying on your antivirus...

1- You help spread these.

2- You won't act against it if your antivirus doesn't detect it.

It's so, sooooooooooooooo easy to open your task manager, msconfig and such, see what boots when you open your computer, see what is running on your computer. I don't need an additional proggie to check that.

See, that is a major problem on the internet. Viruses rely on the credibility and stupidity of internet surfers. By being stupid on the internet, you're helping the worst problem that is crippling this industry right now.

You say Microsoft OS is crippled with vulnerabilities ? Run linux, it's still a better idea than running an antivirus. But then again, if you're stupid, you're opening yourself even more to it.

Install an anti-virus if you want, but if you rely on it, you probably have 10 viruses you're unaware of if you surf shady content.

So please, please don't rely on it, and please, please learn to clean your computer yourself. Even if you pay 80$ a year for a good antivirus.

Again, anti-viruses are good, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO IDENTIFY THREATS YOURSELF FIRST AND MAKE USE OF THAT KNOWLEDGE.
