Is It Possible To Fix Gaming Toxicity?
" removing anonymity? why not a social credit system, open for everyone to see so no one would ever possibly dare to do something toxic! :) Last edited by Tolerantzdestr0yer#4010 on Aug 23, 2020, 12:19:05 PM

Be polite, be the example.
For the majority is not hard to distinguish a post from a troll post. If you reply to a flame post ...then you asked for it. And last two things. 1. Stupidity is unbeatable. 2. Don't start a crusade because it will turn to a witch hunt, after all bad things started with good intentions. |

Don't talk with ppl? It's s single player game after all so you don't need to.
I'm not in a clan nor have any pub access channels spamming me like trades or globals so I notice no toxicity. In general ppl are not worth talking to. (unless they are paying you) Git R Dun! Last edited by Aim_Deep#3474 on Aug 23, 2020, 8:11:01 PM

No. Not possible. Fuck you.
I'll just add my current gear to my shop thread, so people could find me some upgrades...

We could all collectively sacrifice part of our humanity through transhumanism and eventually become literal robots, programmed to be incapable of toxicity and only able to spread good vibes. Otherwise no, "toxicity" is here to stay, as well as cliche buzzwords unfortunately.

it's a sign of our times and "comes with the territory"
ggg wanted to reach a big player base...and well..yup.. this is what the lowest common denominator does to any social system. dunbars number extrapolated yada yada.. personally have no problem with most of the players leaving at some point and a remnant of core players remaining that have always been there. not blaming ggg. they've done nothing but pour their heart into this. don't like it? bye I'm that Morty guy.

If you mean by "our times" the last 200,000 years...

" This thread wasn't referring to toxicity particularly in PoE, but in general. Mainly cos it first has to be proven that PoE even does suffer particularly from a toxicity problem. Yours is yet another comment taking that as a given, based on...what? Ppl keep running on the presumption that PoE is highly toxic, based on little more than their own personal anecdotes and experience. But that hardly makes it true. I can counter an opinion simply with another, such as my own. Or that of some others, such as - ![]() There's no good data provided, but it's not like the data can't be gathered. Cases in point - https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/hkrxrn/neural_network_analysis_of_toxicity_in_poe_sub/ https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/hkjq3c/rpathofexile_toxicity_digested_by_data_scientist/ Both of those analyses have their limitations, as both the comments beneath as well as the posters themselves point out. But they're still a damn sight better than simply taking it as a given based on nothing but ones feel for the issue (and before someone uses said posts to knock on Reddit - that's just using Reddit's willingness to analyze the issue against them, not showing that Reddit is bad i.e. you're hiding behind the fact that this forum hasn't been analyzed as such). And based on said data, PoE doesn't seem to have a particularly toxic community. First properly define what is 'toxic', and then show that it is indeed a major problem. Only then does the question arise as to whether any drastic action is necessary for it, or even if anything is possible to be done at all. The nice thing about the positive approach is that it doesn't hurt anyone - so even if toxicity isn't actually a major issue, it might still be worth doing (unless it's cost prohibitive). But anyway, your contention that toxicity is widely prevalent in PoE isn't validated, at least not from what insights we have. Last edited by Exile009#1139 on Aug 24, 2020, 11:45:44 AM

Fix entirely? No. Some people are just that and enjoy being toxic.
Drastically reduce? Yes. You need to do a few things, first is apply consequences to toxic actions, mostly by removing anonymity. The reason that you don't encounter toxic people as much in real life is because communities know who those people are and can shun them. Similarly when those people move communities they can warn each other. Secondly is you need to remove the incentives for bad behavior. In PoE scamming is highly incentivized because it works, you get rewards for doing it more than you're risking. Similarly here, on this forum, people make threads in general discussion instead of the proper sub forum because it will get more views. |
