Difference between Blizzard and GGG

Diablo 2 has like over 10 million sales, are you saying that's a small number?

Nvm. Non WoW fans.

But honestly, wow players do not play wow for the graphics.
Like.. at all. Just for the gameplay it offers.

I very much doubt making it 'similar to wow' played a big roll when they created this art style.

Also, the market who would alledgedly buy it because it looked 'similar to wow' would have already bought it anyway because it's an RPG by blizzard.

Not at all.

They're out of place in your vision of diablo 2,5.

So let's make all games look like WoW because that's obviously a good thing, right?

Ignoring you from now on as well.
I'm just saying, they fit 'Diablo 3' perfectly.

Maybe not your vision of what diablo 3 'should have been'.
But they work extremely well with the current game.

World of Warcraft does not look like a moving painting, which is the design philosophy behind the art direction for Diablo 3.

That's not what I said, and it's not the point. The point is that they are creating a welcome environment for WoW customers who haven't played Diablo before.

I don't think you should be so confident about that. I'm not saying it was, but there is a good chance that it was. It does make sense, and it DOES have a very similar art style to WoW. I'm not thinking that is a coincidence.

Why take the risk? If you made a hardcore ARPG that felt very different than WoW, looked very different from WoW, and was filled with comments from the 'vocal minority' that it's so refreshing to see Blizzard make a dark and gritty game again. You can bet you would have WoW haters in there saying how D3 is SOOO much better than WoW, and how WoW sucks, and is for kids, and all the usual stuff. It would happen. You know it. Why risk the largest potential customer group?

Nah. Really, people who would buy it just because it looks similar to wow are not people who care about any of the game's aspects in the first place.
I firmly believe they would have bought the game regardless. Nor are those people susceptible to any kind of information about the game, really.

They are like call of duty fans. They will buy anything, regardless of how good or down right horrible it is just because of the brand name.

Tagek, I find myself often agreeing with you, but I think in this instance you are underestimating the psychological comfort of familiarity.

They may not think for a moment "gee, I like this, the art is like WoW!" but if they like WoW and the art reminds them on some level of it (even a subconcious level...) then, it will make them feel more comfortable and positive towards the game, overall.

I don't really think that the art DOES look like WoW (I mean, two screenshots in similarly constructed areas look alike? Oh no, the Sears Tower is just a ripoff of the Ford Building!11one!), but as a longtime (but no longer...) WoW player, maybe I'm just denying my baser instincts.

That said, companies hire from within more often then without. Oh no, a bunch of people who used to work on WoW worked on diablo... (of course they do! Would you rather use someone you know is a good systems/encounter/art/game designer, or do interviews and hope you get a good hire or 50?), and of course there will be similiaries between someone's work, if they worked on two different IPs...
So you are saying all those WoW fanboys we hear from in our day to day life are nothing but a bunch of sheep?

No, what I'm saying is that wow players that are such sheep that they buy the game over a similar art style, would have bought the game regardless of the actual art style in the first place. (I hope this makes enough sense, as the actual explanation is phrased rather poorly :P)
