Difference between Blizzard and GGG

Nah. Really, people who would buy it just because it looks similar to wow are not people who care about any of the game's aspects in the first place.
I firmly believe they would have bought the game regardless. Nor are those people susceptible to any kind of information about the game, really.

They are like call of duty fans. They will buy anything, regardless of how good or down right horrible it is (like with cod).

Tagek, I find myself often agreeing with you, but I think in this instance you are underestimating the psychological comfort of familiarity.

They may not think for a moment "gee, I like this, the art is like WoW!" but if they like WoW and the art reminds them on some level of it (even a subconcious level...) then, it will make them feel more comfortable and positive towards the game, overall.

I don't really think that the art DOES look like WoW (I mean, two screenshots in similarly constructed areas look alike? Oh no, the Sears Tower is just a ripoff of the Ford Building!11one!), but as a longtime (but no longer...) WoW player, maybe I'm just denying my baser instincts.

That said, companies hire from within more often then without. Oh no, a bunch of people who used to work on WoW worked on diablo... (of course they do! Would you rather use someone you know is a good systems/encounter/art/game designer, or do interviews and hope you get a good hire or 50?), and of course there will be similiaries between someone's work, if they worked on two different IPs...

There's always a little familiarity.. but the thing is that people who need are really affected by this subconcious familiarity will still already buy the game (most of them anyway).

I am (was) a long term wow player myself (I'm basically the opposite of the aforementioned group of people), and I feel no need to seek out games that look similar to wow at all, nor do I feel extra attracted to games that do look similar to it. If anything I resent them for taking the easy way out and just copying it's style, when it's poorly done anyway.

Imo diablo 3 very much has it's own style, and can only truly be compared to wow because of it's colourful look, and simply because D3 and WoW share some developers.
No art dev / painter / whatever is going to deliberately change his style (if he even can) just because it's a different game.

And what of those who don't by it FOR that reason, but see it as something they can relate to? Something they are familiar with. Something they like.

For example: Mr. X likes 3d shooters that follow the WW2 theme. If a game in a different but closely related genre like over the shoulder shooter ( 3rd person shooter ) comes out he won't buy it BECAUSE it's based on WW2, but if it's based on WW2 it is something about it that he will like.

Well yeah, it can always help.
But I just mean, the people who are actually significantly influenced by something like that will generally already have many other reasons for buying the game.

But yeah, it could always generate some extra sales.
But nothing particularly noticable, imo.

And there are those that come into a beta test already hating a company for a former game they made and that make connections between art style of the old game to the new one make quick judgments against the new game.

Those people come into the game just to look for defects and not to try to enjoy it for what it is. They don't even give it a shot, just see one defect and rip it as a whole.

I think both situations are of the extreme and wrong to do.

I take every game as its own thing and play it a while before making any decisions. If it is fun to me, I don't care who made it, I will play it.

I hate WOW, don't like starcraft any of them, but I like Diablo 3. I don't like many blizzard decisions and games, but still like Diablo 3. There are millions of people just like me.
Age of Exile, Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Torchlight 2. What a year for gaming, Collect em' all and have some fun!

Oh yea LOL and DOTA2 also for fans of MOBAs. So many games, so little time!

Just a little piece of fact for you: The Diablo 3 team is a completely separate team from World of Warcraft (which as a game borrowed a lot of ideas from Diablo anyways)

It's not... :

Alex Mayberry is Senior Producer on Diablo III.
2008 - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard Entertainment; Senior Producer
2007 - World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Blizzard Entertainment; Producer

Chris Vincent Metzen is the Vice President of Creative Development... he's of course been on the WOW team.

David (Dave) Adams is Lead Level Designer
2008 - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard; Level Designer
2007 - World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Blizzard; Additional Design

Glenn "Raneman" Rane is a concept artist with Blizzard Entertainment. His primary work has been on the Warcraft and Starcraft series

Joseph Lawrence is Lead Sound Designer for Diablo III.
2008 - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
2007 - World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade

Mark Gibbons "Red Knuckle" is a concept artist
2010 - World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Blizzard Entertainment; Concept Artist
2008 - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard Entertainment; Creative Development Artist

Michael Chu is a Quest Designer for Diablo III.
2007 - World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade

Nathan Lutsock is an Associate Producer on Diablo III.
2004 - World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment

Phroilan (AKA Froilan) Gardner was a Senior Artist at Blizzard and has contributed concept art for Diablo III, and great deal of artwork to World of Warcraft.
A number of cards for the World of Warcraft: Trading Card Game (WoW: TCG) have had artwork created by Phroi.

Sojin Hwang is a Concept Artist for Diablo III.
Sojin has done the art for a few WoW:TCG cards

Trent Kaniuga is a Blizzard artist working on Diablo III.
2007 - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard; Concept Art
2006 - World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Blizzard; Concept/Environment Artist

Jay Wilson is the Game Director of Diablo III.
After joining Blizzard Jay contributed to MMO World of WarCraft

and so on, and so on... basically ALL the big decision makers for D3 were directly from WOW... and many of the others were influenced by WOW, and I have no doubt that they were specifically instructed to make it as such.

...Nice. Nowhere in the posts that follow does alcovitch acknowledge he was flat-out wrong. He merely latches onto zeto's commentary beneath the barrage of facts.

I pity people who can't at least admit when they've made a mistake and learn from it. Scour the history if you want -- it's happened to me and I've acknowledged it. It's called learning and being honest with yourself. You're not perfect, you can be wrong. It doesn't mean your point is any less valid or that your opinion is any less worthy of expression.

A well-spoken troll is still a troll, it would seem.

One of your cornerstone arguments was utterly countered by zeto, alco, and you couldn't even be good enough to admit it.

Deep pity.

So true. The irreverent nature of Diablo has always been a plus-point for me. Buriza-do Kyanon? Hilarious. The fact that some of the set items were named after Korean heroes?! So utterly anachronistic but awesome nonetheless.

There was always a wink in Diablo, a nod to gamers who will get the jokes. I feel that part of what makes Diablo 3 abhorrent to me is that the wink is aimed at people who played WoW a lot...I didn't. It isn't a Diablo game, feels nothing like. D3 panders to the pandas, if you will. Ick.

How do you know all winks will be to wow though? :)
There's plenty of awesome winks to previous diablo games in D3, and I'm sure there will be winks to other, perhaps more far-fetched stuff as well.

Although probably not as far-fetched as korean heroes, I'll give you that.

They've actually pretty much revealed (as far as I can tell anyway) that there'll be a secret ghost or zombie cow level.
