Just out of curiosity, what is this "RPG" element in poe everyone speaking about?
To me, it just pure hack'n'slash, straight as a monorail.

Dunno what could be more "RPG" like than assuming the role a of an exile who becomes a god slayer on their journey only to get randomly killed in a random location by a random noname skeleton archer with a random wooden arrow out of the random nowhere cuz the goddess of fucking randomness deemed it so...

Wait..doesn't the R of rpg stands for random? o.O

RNG is what you're thinking of

Character progression (stat/gear etc) is an RPG element.
That element has been defined as RPG through gaming history.

This.

Since the beginning of graphic CRPGs, leveling and progressing in skills is what defined an RPG. Any sort of story or roll were almost coincidental.

Some purists will give another definition. But language evolves over time. If people use a word in a certain way, then that's what it means, regardless of what it may have meant in the past. For the last forty years, in the context of CRPGs, it means leveling, skills, better gear etc.

The mistake is truly mine then:(

Sarcasm aside, the acts themselves have quite nice rpg feeling to them, not anywhere near d2 atmosphere and lore but still very decent in my opinion. What comes after is another story.

I'd say the story aspect has been equally important part of the genre, I mean the whole rpg thingy comes from real life role playing games such as D&D and similar games. Story and Leveling elements were simply implanted into the "virtual reality" in form of rpg games over time.

D2's long term success wasn't just about the stat/gear and leveling aspect it was also able to survive so long because it had an extremely good story, lore visual and audio atmosphere that made repeating the acts for the thousands of time more acceptable than other arpgs, imho.

PoE2. gottem??

But seriously I'm quitting leagues 2 weeks in of late because I've done everything the game has to offer. Do I really get anything out of beating oshabi again? Sirus or Uber elder again this league? I'm looking forward to PoE2 because even though I still really love the game I need ascendancies and skills and gem configurations that feel fundamentally new. I want to try a shapeshifter that gets 9 6Ls that can only include 9 active gems rather than 8 utility gem 2Ls, a bunch of heralds, and a single 6L dps setup
Half-Life 2
Need more brains, exile?
That one is easy, just give me a infinit amount of money and i would make games people would enjoy.

Character progression (stat/gear etc) is an RPG element.
That element has been defined as RPG through gaming history. It's not just about creating a unique character with a certain backstory and making choices/playing a role, in the storyline.
It's not that stricly defined.
You could even argue almost every game where you play a character is a role playing game, but it's not that simply defined. It's what gaming history has formed the genre as over the years.
There is no other genre name you could fit that gameplay element into. Except maybe stat/loot progression simulator :D

Agreed. However, coming back to the original thread topic, what defines an (A)rpg then? Why is PoE different from Skyrim, or Warframe, or WoW, but not from Diablo, Grim Dawn and Titan Quest? Apart from the top down, isometric perspective (cos that would be a pretty damn limiting genre feature) or everything being RNG-based (which turns a lot of people off, who might otherwise like the genre).

Thats pretty much the difference. ARPG is isometric h&s with char progression with main premise of destroying hordes of monsters. If warframe was isometric it would be ARPG, but its not and its horde shooter.

Edit: Turns out i was wrong

Action role-playing video games (often abbreviated action RPG or ARPG) are a subgenre of role-playing video games. The games emphasize real-time combat where the player has direct control over the characters as opposed to turn or menu-based combat while still having a focus on character's Stats in order to determine relative strength and abilities. These games often use action game combat systems similar to hack and slash or shooter games. Action role-playing games may also incorporate action-adventure games, which include a mission system and RPG mechanics, or massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) with real-time combat systems.
