I've only played a couple of the generations - Blue, Pearl, and Black - and honestly? Other than swapping in a new set of Pokemon and bringing in maybe a new feature or two per generation, they're all pretty much the same.
Each successive generation, there's more stuff to do in the game and that much more... weight? feature fatigue? There's this thing when you notice a game has so much junk to do that you will never finish it if you are a physically/mentally healthy person and that saps the desire to play. I've noticed that feeling in the last couple generations. There are so many Pokemon in the later games, and so much stuff to do with them, that it's mind-boggling. So despite the very palpable improvements between Blue and the later games I played in terms of game balance, graphics/sound, and bunches of other stuff, I never got into Pearl or Black the same way I got into Blue. In the first generation, it was actually feasible to "Catch them all". I don't even think that's the series' tagline anymore. TL;DR - Blue, because I could actually finish it. |

Damn kids and their fancy, shiny vidygaem colors. Back in my day all we had as red and blue, uphill both ways, etc...
P.S. Red is the correct choice here. |

Crystal was the best game IMO. I must have had three or four different cartridges from different kids around my neighborhood who didn't want a pokemon game anywhere near them for fear of being a nerd. I must have finished Crystal at least 8 times. :)
Might I recommend the Vietnamese version? Or Pokemon Quartz if you want a good laugh. (gotta love bad translations!) |
