by watching how they race, it makes melee so shit to play

I call bullshit to "uber elder is for melee the easiest now" because we have seen lvl 36 uber elder BOW kill:

https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/ajziy8/level_36_deathless_uber_elder_kill

And completeley naked Zombie Summoner uber elder kill only wearing a weapon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3P3cTQL_qA

Show me melee accomplish anything like that and how "easy" it is and one more condition: Strike Skills only let me see your easiness please.

36? What a slacker! :P

Tie, same guy that killed kativa first at exilecon did UE at lvl 32 deathless

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzp5sx6ZRA4

Show me one melee doing it at twice that lvl 64 even.

Bows and spells way OP for a long time.

Then again even spells that are melee are bad/dangerous like CoC discharge - you better be stacked before getting in melee range to discharge with those bosses or you will die. So it has more to do with a) range b) all the fire and forget shit like brands, TS, minions, WOrb etc being OP AF. Where all you do is run around and dodge while certain spells/bows do your work.
Git R Dun!

Dude has impeccable positioning and timing. Exilecon race was probably just free money to him. Best part about his recent one was when he manipulated 4 of those homing ball things. That said people are right about melee being relative bad for one reason. If you are close to elder in that fight his spread of icicles is huge while otherwise they go in a straight line making it impossible to dodge. Otherwise that fight is doable.

Speed running is a game of it's own. They build for one very specific purpose. Most available spells didn't get used either. Like speed running in any other game, it has little to do with normal game play.

Melee really is neglected in this game though. But that's more because the game has become a game of kill everything in sight, as fast as possible. By it's nature, melee can't do that. For melee to play the same way, it wouldn't be melee any more. Cyclone in the last league is an example of that. It barely qualified as melee. A real melee weapon doesn't clear half the screen. It's one of the funnest skills in the game, even after the nerf. But it's not really melee.

It's an inherent part of the current game play, not the skill itself.

Ideally, wouldn't the right way to balance this out be to balance towards spellcasting being primarily better at map-clearing and melee/totems being primarily better for bossing?

Each would have their place in the game instead of competing directly with one another over the same thing in which one is intrinsically better by design.
In a game where monster attacks can be evaded characters that attack from the distance will ALWAYS be better, no matter what you do. You would need to make melle literally immortal (so they wont need to dodge anything) for it to be better.

Exactly this should be the target i dont know why so many players are trying to not see this.

And inb4 not doable id answer that a lack of imagination is locking you down and make it "not doable".

Then enlighten us, how would you make melee better than bows/spells for bossing? If you say its so simple.
