I'm stuck at lvl 82
Hi and welcome,
some nice advice has been given so just add some extra tips about gear mostly. First of all ES is a bit special bcos you can´t heal with flasks in an easy way (life flasks) and has other disadvantages / advantages https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Energy_shield If you want to build an ES character (with Chaos Inoculation - CI) with limited budget take a look at some cool unique items. Always compare available unique items with rare items on the market. Body - Infernal Mantle seems very cheap on market -- nice damage boost and decent ES pool -- you need to avoid being on low mana though (under 35% of total mana) ! - to not take an extra 25% spell damage from monsters! (you loose one aura) Drop Avatar of fire An alternative is good rare 6-linked ES body (usually Vaal Regalia) Shield: Apep's Supremacy https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Apep%27s_Supremacy Overall great item but "bleed imunity" once CI is allocated is the best thing imo. Helm: The Vertex Vaal Mask is pretty god overall - aim for 280+ ES https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/The_Vertex The current one is decent too Boots: Sin Trek https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Sin_Trek or rare with movement speed, high ES, res etc Gloves / amulets / rings -- get missing stats, res and as much ES as ¨possible Fill the stats using crafting bench Belt - rare crystal belt, Bated Breath or Ascent From Flesh is a solid unique choice. Others: - jewels etc Energy from within unique jewel is popular -- take Melding and put it to the socket nearby to convert life to ES Rare jewels -- ES / spell damage / + whatever missing Watcher´s Eye - expensive -- the last thing you need now … Your flask are bad (it´s same for 99% new players) You need to deal with ailments (freeze, bleed, ignite), curses and stun unless you have smth on your gear (i.e. shield I have mentioned). You will use utility flasks (Quick silver, Granite/Basalt, stibnite, Jade, …) or some unique You need to rebuild your tree if you want to convert to CI (full ES). If you want to plan your own builds download Path of building and upload your char/tree/gear there and use our recommendation to correct your build (in PoB before applying it ingame). You need to learn lots of things so don´t be in hurry. Your journey just begun! Last edited by Rakiii#5559 on Sep 20, 2019, 9:54:51 AM

Not to be a jerk, but you said you didn't want to follow a guide so that someone else could dictate how you play, but here you are asking for help and people are telling you what to do.
Best advice for any first timer is to look at a good guide, they have explanations for why they take certain points on the tree, use certain gear, etc... Swallow your pride and you'll be leveling up in no time. My first character was SO bad, I would be embarrassed to even mention what it was, I started looking at guides and it was night and day. |

Yeah, would be great to hear how my tips on your character helped you.
Switching to full es can't be done slowly in Path of Exile. You need to go with a life/es hybrid. Once you get decent es gear, you can switch to full es. Another very important thing I did not mention are your flasks. You are using 1 life flask, 1 mana, 1 hybrid flask. Thats too much. Usually 1 life flask is perfect. Use one with instant recovery. In stressful situation when every millisecond counts you don't want to wait for your life to fill up over a few seconds. By then you would have died. When you want to go with a hybrid you need an instant life flask and some bleed/freeze/curse immunity on it. The other two flasks can be replaced with a jade flask to gain +3000 evasion and a stibnite flask for 100% increased evasion. This combination will give you so much evasion, enemies won't hit you anymore (mostly). Use both flask every time before you run into a big pack of mobs. It will recharge very quickly, you can basically have both flasks up all the time. Only at bosses it can be more difficult. Although you don't have evasion gear, it should still be notably better in terms of survivability. Also look for +x number of charges, +increased duration. And bleed/freeze/curse immunity. 'Remove curses on use' can be very useful for higher maps. It also removes temp chains or elemental weakness. When you alch higher maps, those are very common. As long as your resistances can't deal with elemental weakness, curse remove with flasks is a nice workaround. |

" When energy shield gets hit, it sits there for a good while. Your health is ALWAYS regenerating. ES is a bitch to get working well because it requires, like I said above, tons of faster start of energy shield regen and higher es regen modifiers in general. There are very annoying ways of leeching ES as well and many require you doing very high damage and having high ES so that the leech actually works well. With hp you also can use any flask to heal yourself, there are extra steps to do this with ES. The only flasks I know of that can heal ES are: https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/The_Sorrow_of_the_Divine https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Cinderswallow_Urn And for the record I'm not saying ES is bad. I've seen many godly characters based on them. But I don't recommend it for your first few characters. Get a better understanding of the game first and then move on to the big time expensive builds. " Yeah, i'll make sure i uptade here the results, what changes i applied and the results that came from them. I have a pretty busy weekend ahead of me so i won't be able to do the transition immediatly, but i'll make sure to do it as sonn as possible. I guess flasks are a pretty big deal, and i'm sleeping on them. I only have the muscle memory to use 3 flasks immediatly without having to think too much, i'll see if i can train using slots 4 and 5 too (I died so many times trying to outheal cursed blood not knowing you can remove it with some specific flasks xD) Last edited by recolino#1878 on Sep 20, 2019, 10:53:16 PM

" I swear i went to the market and bought the best budget stuff i could find xD Guess it's time to start spending those C like there's no tomorrow, so that i can actually have a tomorrow where i'm lvl 83+ I was always so confused as to how people got so much ES. Last night with some minor research i found out how the stat multiplication works in POE, so every little increase in the stats in your equipment will turn out as pretty huge overall increases after everything is taken into consideration... I always tought like wtf why are those stupid people paying 10 exalts for a chest that has 120 (of something) while theres another one with 110 of that same something for only 10 chaos, it's a small increase that shouldn't justify the price difference. But oh boy it does. I'm slowly starting to understand what makes items good, and i'm starting to be able to roughly price stuff, know good white bases... Oh boy, this game is so complex to pick up and learn, and if you don't learn the complex stuff you can't progress. It's pretty insane, never played a game so beginner-unfriendly in my life xD What makes up for it is the community wich is very beginner friendly, it's also a case of i've never seen a game like this, where lots of people help you out expecting nothing in return. Even ingame in global chat, if you have a question you'll be answered immediatly by many people Last edited by recolino#1878 on Sep 20, 2019, 11:04:21 PM

" Before you do that, please get yourself this tool: https://github.com/Openarl/PathOfBuilding/releases Basically it allows you to import your char and then allocate skillpoints or equip/craft gear to check the results before you do it ingame. It a little confusing and complex, but pretty much mandatory if you dont like to waste your currency ;) Also it allows you to export your char and post the link here, so other players can copy the link and modify your tree/gear/gems etc. to show you some alternatives. This is the fastest and easiest way to show you what could be done. In case you really want to commit to an ES build, you should consider dropping one of your wands and replace it with a shield. Shields are the 2nd most important source for ES and can also roll dps mods. Not as good as wands could dps wise, but still. A shield with 300 flat ES would result in 600 additional ES for your build, because right now you allocated exactly 100% increased ES on your tree - which btw isnt good enough. Aim for 250%+ for a pure ES build. If you had those 250%, then a 300 ES shield would provide 1050 ES total. Same goes for the chest. If you had a 400 ES chest, it would provide 800ES right now and if you had 250% ES on your tree, it would provide 1400 ES total. So those two items and a 250%ES scaling on your tree alone would provide 2450ES - ignoring all other gear slots and auras. You will have to buy new gear and rebuild your tree, but it can be done. It should be fairly easy to push you towards 5k ES on a budget, if you are willing to do what needs to be done. |

Some good advice above. One thing that jumped out with a quick look at your PoB was the lack of any defenses. I have a glass cannon with only 4200 EH (life) at 90, but he's fairly survivable because he has 50% evade and 50% dodge before flasks, as well as leech. He can still be one shot by some boss mechanics, but doesn't die much in maps or mines.
Offense is also defense. With enough offense and some range, you can kill most things before they get close. As suggested PoB is a good investment of your time. Look at similar builds from guides to see what the authors are doing both offensively and defensively. (You can look at a range of elementalists to see more defense, but obviously look at builds with your primary skills to understand offense. It will take some investigation time, but you can figure out how much of the difference is due to passives, how much to gem selection, and how much to gear. As you're hearing, flasks are extremely important. I found it easier to practice with one flask first, than add in a second, and eventually a third. Routine flask use when mapping/delving makes you a lot more powerful. You're missing a lot if you save them for "oops" moments. One thing I don't think I've seen anyone mention is the importance of movement. If this is your first character, it's almost certain you aren't moving enough. The fact that you have a primary skill that channels is probably not helping. I've never played Incinerate, but it looks like 1.6 sec to max stages. If Faster Casting reduces that, it's still taking you about 1 sec to max stages I assume. That may not seem long, but my glass cannon is Scourge Arrow, and with him there is a very big difference between 1 sec and 0.6 sec to max stages. Movement varies hugely with your build obviously. A tanky melee character can stand safely in one place for several seconds or more if there are no one-shot mechanics to dodge. With a caster, one second may still be too long even after you improve your health and defenses. Cheers |

" I agree that es is not that good of a first charachter choice life is much easier. That's very good advice. But i don't agree that you need 10k es to operate or spend many exalted orbs. It's just a more complicated type of build. It doesn't have to be expensive. My essence drainer in legion league had 7k something es and very cheap gear. The only valuable item is my 6l shavs by virtue of being a 6l but you can perform very well on a cheap 5 link shav or a different rare chest with chaos inoculation. All other items are a few chaos at most. Gear
Spoiler
I farmed uber elder with this build and delved close to 500, timeless domains, high tier maps etc so it works very well. Don't be discouraged from playing an es build because you think it's gonna be expensive. Last edited by kompaniet#2874 on Sep 21, 2019, 1:41:29 PM

" Sure enough. I've tried my best to get as much cast speed as possible for incinerate. I actually move around a lot. For monsters, i generally kill them with incinerate before they even get close. If they get close or there are skillshots coming my way, i move away immediatly even if i'm not at stage 8 and kill them with flame surge wich deals insane damage, since incinerate will have made them all burn. Flame surge is also my boss killing tool. They work together surprisingly well. Against bosses i apply burn with the movement skill itself and pop them out rather quickly |
