Addressing Toxicity and Elitism Before League Launch
So I want to talked about an issue within the PoE community that some even deny exists. Regardless of what your opinion is: it does, and has been recognized by people such as Rhykker, ziggyd and quinn: toxicity and elitism. This is something we need to all check ourselves on if we truely want to be the inclusive community that we claim to be, and want continue to be welcome new players to the game. I dont know how many times, especially at the beginning of a league, I turn on global (not just a problem in global. elitism exists on all platforms, such as the PoE discord.) and I see someone new getting yelled at because they didnt read the wiki, or their build is slightly different than someone whos been playing longer, and then getting berated and put down because its not the same tier as theirs. Its the "git gud" mentality. If we want to be this welcoming community we claim to be, so many people need to stop falling to elitism and just help people. Could they have read the wiki? Probably, but help them anyways if you can. Elitism can be detrimental to a game and its image, just look at LoL, Dota and heros. All games that are known for elitism within the community, to the point where if any one of those games ever comes up, its ALWAYS mentioned.
If we want our game to continue to bring people in and have them STAY, we need to be more inclusive, less elitist, and less toxic. Sure, theres always going to be that type of person that just IS toxic. thats them, they hate life, but maybe if we check ourselves, we can address what levels we can. it rather makes sense to tell new folks to join a guild than recommending them global chat to look for help
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

Yeah this is actually a good idea. Theres nothing wrong with still adddressing a problem though. Its not just a problem within global.

" thhis. youre the type of person im talking about. if you cant have an actual discussion, leave. |

" If you want to start a discussion I suggest trying different aproach from stating that community is bad. How about: Do you find questions that can be answered by literally clicking first search result in google ruin your chat experience? or Would you like to turn every global channel into help channel? Join a Guild, Don't use Global or Trade chats, and NEVER trust the Wiki to be 100% correct in everything it says.
Thats the best 3 pieces of advice i can give new players. Everything else just comes with time, experience, and making more builds/characters. Ask lots of questions to players who have the experience and youll learn everything you need soon enough. Most people in this game are helpful and welcoming of new players. The shitty people just tend to be louder and more recognized. For a prime example... If i rip someone off on an item trading they will probably go to Reddit come here to the Forums and raise hell to anyone willing to listen how i slighted them and such.. Now same exact person except i helped this guy out.. Maybe i helped run him through Uber Lab or crafted Multimod on one of his weapons and asked for nothing in return... NO ONE will ever know. No one will go make a thread or post on reddit i helped them. Thats one thing people need to realize. Just because you hear one thing happening all the time doesn't mean the other good shit isn't happening or there's more bad people than good. If anything good things happen more just no one talks about it people only want to talk about their bad experiences with people. This gives the impression there's way more shitty people in this game than there really is in reality. There is a fine line between Consideration and Hesitation. The former is Wisdom, the latter is Fear. Last edited by Demonoz#1375 on Sep 4, 2019, 12:25:40 PM

" where did i state that the whole community is bad? maybe you should remove that thought. discussing a problem within the community isnt calling the whole community bad and shouldnt be responded to, how you responded. |

" why must it be "dont join global chat"? why cannot we adddress the problem within global. and reread what i wrote: "elitism is not just a problem within global". it is a POE problem. just because good players might out number the loud ones, doesnt mean we cant address how loud people are being.
