EXP LOSS POLL

Bah, death EXP penalty would make sense in the current PoE ONLY IF PoE would be the paramount of technical stability and reliability due to it still being a MANDATORY ONLINE "experience".

The current system is plagued by the death EXP penalty simply due to TencentGGG's reluctance to "properly balance" content - like getting content to a closer level to the player, we never get to experience that except in Delve, where they simply slap "moar" HP or damage "just because" - and relegating the level 100 status ON EVERY GODDAMN LEVEL UP. Add to the insult the lack of proper danger/rewards ratios and you have to deal with the current lackluster scenario...

I would like TencentGGG to post a real statistic regarding players reaching level 100 by showing us the way they leveled from 99 to 100. I am fairly confident >90% of them NEVER went the full leveling BY ONLY DOING REAL DIFFICULT CONTENT and not regress below T15 rare corrupted maps AND not due to map scarcity.

PoE HAS DIFFICULT END GAME ENCOUNTERS. Those are best experienced with a DAMAGE CAP like RT. Skill is shown when you actually run those close to suicidal monds on that end game tier content and SURVIVE.

I would be ALL IN the second they would adopt a system like the one proposed by @Kulze a few posts before. These days I'm so uninvested due to continuous bugs and crashes that I'll probably disregard PoE entirely as soon as Borderlands 3 hits Steam (if they keep "this great job" though, I'll might even buy it on Epic and bid farewell to PoE until at least 4.0).

I should have reached 100 a few days ago (already at 11%, reached 50% around Delve, got deleveled to 0% because it's a nice idea to keep playing the main character in the week before the major patch and I also deal badly with a "legit" death on him, and further deleveled 40% EXP amassed during Betrayal - still thought I could play in the week before the Legion "hit", but this time I didn't even flinched seeing that bar progress downwards), who knows if I'll find the "enjoyment" to even reach it - by playing my own mandatory dual wielding RT personal build versus all kinds of content...

Regardless, I might "rush" getting my 100, if I'll ever stomach trading or partying for "the push", but I digress...

Meanwhile, I'm sorry to break it to all the players that don't already acknowledge that 6 PORTALS are the ONLY RELEVANT PENALTY on Softcore since a very long time ago.

Getting 1 shot at running intrincately long content like "Labyrinth" relies on technical stability and reliability, which seems to be at an abysmal low point this league, so that would put a damper on a proper EXP reward system based on difficulty...

Still, we have what we have, but TencentGGG should, for once, properly address this aspect by either reworking the system to be more stomachable post 95 AND/OR actually improve the EXP gain penalty and balance the danger/reward curve at least EXP wise for a change...
PSS: Our almighty TencentGGG overlords are very scrupulous regarding criticizing their abilities to take proper decisions and consider everything "needlessly harsh and condescending"...

Good to know "free speech" doesn't apply in any form or manner on the forums these days...

While I'm not a big fan of death penalty myself, I rather think that this isn't the problem. The problem is that GGG is clueless in balancing their game.

Those awful one shots, chaotic mod combos on the mobs, stupid overkill skills like it was with the legion before the nerf. Being annihilated from the distance at which you don't even see the mobs... NOW much more HP on almost everything... This all adds up to bitter experience.

Server stability is the other issue. Lags, DC's, Crashes, Desyncs adds another layer of bull*hit...

If this game would have been less buggy, more polished and more balanced I think that people would engage in less of a chaotic cluster*uck where one second ur fine the other you are WHAAA, I died?. It would make you die less and actually your death might be REALLY YOUR FAULT.

The real culprit might not be exactly the XP penalty, sometimes u just have very little control over what's going on.
New mute system is terrible - no trade...

XP loss because of bugs and disconnections are painfull (like others said). You get punnished for something you are not resposible.

On the other hand I understand it and it always tells me a lesson that there is something wrong with my build. Low Life, Low defence ect. But in higher levels it's a pain to lose 10% exp. And then there is still that one mob that is overtuned and almost oneshots me, because of several modifiers, or like I mentioned before lags.

In Betrayl I had a lot of rubberbanding, even the ping was low. Game stands still for a few seconds and fast forward to the actual stage. In Legion I hat something similar 3 times (less than in Betrayl) but not with that fast forward thing, it just skipped (ports) me to the actual point and confuses me. What mostly ends in death if I find myself in the middle of a mob groupe.

If I look to other games there are several solutions.
-MMOs: armor/weapon losing quality or durability (Repair Orb?)
-Grim Dawn: If you die, you can go to your grave and pick up (a part of) your xp-loss
-Shooters: If you die, you have to wait a few seconds to respawn (maybe not that optimal)
-Also I can think of a x% XP-Boost till you have reached the exp. you had before.
-Or maybe just 1-2% (max. 5%) exp. loss

Also you can combine one of the points above.

What I hate are time limits, It can be very stressful. It's OK in Zana missions, but all the time...please don't. (I read a post before)

Always funny to see how some people claim the 6 portals are some sort of a punishment. What kind of yokel build are you running to die so much. I mean hell, I have 5k HP here and its rare to die once.

Casuals, people who are really bad at games.. such people.

It's also not to be seen separate, we already loose 10% exp, why also punish for messing up then?
This is the case because we can't loose the level, hence that's the stop-gap for not simply 'dieing through' the content and receiving the reward nonetheless.

Hence if the exp-punishment goes the re-work of the portal-system can suddenly be focused, this allows for other mechanics to finally be adjusted properly. PoE is a patchwork game which was slapped together over a long time, the patchwork was never streamlined and properly worked out though, it would finally be able to be done then.

Casuals reach red maps?
Experience loss would be fine if:

1: The servers worked perfectly
No lags, DC, etc.

2: ISP worked perfectly
GGG not being at fault does not mean they should feign ignorance

3: Game code worked perfectly
As of now whirling blades can randomly cast themselves second time and take you back into the position you moved out. lol

4: Experience required for level 90+ was decreased
Small % of players doing races "got to 100 too fast", so GGG somehow deducted they should increase the required exerience for everyone.

5: There was method of regaining some of the lost XP, like getting back to corpse
Like returning to corpse

6: Dangerous enemy attacks were actually visible.
Have fun dodging an instant, un-telegraphed high damage ranged attack outside of the screen, or the one that is covered by burning ground, prophecy storm, enemy models, skill effects, on-death effects and other things.

But alas, we are talking about a company that will blindly follow instructions of a vocal minority, that thinks making trading insufferable experience is a good way of balancing, and that sees nothing wrong with rampart botting.

If nothing else, expect death penalty to go higher because one of the popular streamers states it's too low and reddit will mindlessly push the idea like sheep.
I am against death penalty. I'm 700 hour into this game and every time it pisses me off to lose hours of playing because of random uncontrollable event... lags or bad mechanics are same to me.

As the thing stands now, if you want to level to 100 (and you're not PRO poe player) don't do any thing beside comfortable map level, no bosses, no time crystals, no abyss, no breaches. Avoid betrayal encounters by logging out (since the ambush of 3 betrayal members with 3 stars can kill you) and avoid red monsters for Einhar.... that sure sounds like fun...

The death penalty was mechanic copied from Diablo series (Normal, nightmare and hell difficulty with 0%, 5% and 10% exp loss on death and resistance penalty). Poe had 3 difficulties and they have since removed them. The result is integrated death penalty at certain point which is bad mechanic. In first model you can choose to play higher difficulty and with that comes greater risk and greater rewards in sense of loot drops, the other model is just bad.

As others said, if they polished the game, remove bugs, lags, disconnects and rubberbanding it would be ok... not to mention balancing some off-screen attacks, horrible monster mod stacking etc.

Perhaps we all start with level 100 characters then we don't have to worry about Exp loss. Oh wait that would make the game trivial and pointless.

Surprisingly... it won't.
Think a bit deeper about it, your level 100 character might have ascendancies and the passive points... but it isn't wearing any items at all, those make or break a build.

I'm not saying this should be done, though the weight thrown behind 'lvl 100' is far too big from the side of the community in this case. Lvl 100 is a great deal to achieve but by no means even remotely necessary as long as you get good equipment.
If you wear badly fitting one your character will be worse then any lvl 80 at this point still after all.
GGG balance is like getting a pizza which is burnt on the sides, raw in the middle and misses the most of the toppings.
Then upon sending it back you get a raw side, burnt middle and enough toppings to drench everything in grease.
Everything fixed but still broken.
YES!

Remove this stupid Exp-Loss!

Thankfully they will never ever listen to you guys.
