It's fine as is, it's there to hurt you enough to sort your shit out and stop dying.

There are good arguments for both sides of this.

For EXP penalty: -Meaningful Reason not to die
-Quantifiable demarcation of build viability/personal skills
-Game theming
-Developer preference/Current system(IE that's the way it is)

Against exp penalty: -There are already other reasons not to die(limited portals, lab one life rule, time limits, etc)
-Exp depletion doesn't necessarily translate into either a lack of skill or build weakness because of sometimes very common crashes and connection issues. Even without them, this game can be unforgiving and random with its difficulty spikes.
-There's no real detriment to other players if it becomes possible for more people to grind unimpeded to level 100.
-There are already specific game modes that discourage death(Hard Core)


The way I see it, a 10% penalty is fairly arbitrary, all things considered. Games like dark souls make death an intricate part of the game, and the limited number of accesses to maps really does more to gate unusable builds and bad players than an exp penalty. For example, what's to stop someone from self imploding a hundred times into atziri? Would an exp penalty stop them? No, it's the limited number of tries you get, exp penalty or not. Secondarily, the exp penalty doesn't apply if you are at 0% exp, since you can't lose levels. There are absolutely games in which an exp penalty on death will slide you back levels if you're too low on the percentage bar.

At the same time, I'm not super invested in getting rid of such a penalty. It's there, it's just something they decided early. Like having hp and mana or having three different elemental damage types instead of four. Arbitrary, but binding. Meh. I'm really on the fence.

Absolute garbage mechanic maybe a souls like mechanic where you pick up your xp or maybe diablo style xp multiplyers losing hours of progress it's just terrible design there are better ways to punish failure hell bosses keep the HP value they had when you died so why lose xp in the first place I'd rather have to do the whole thing over maybe that would fix it especially when there's so many insta deaths or just cheesy ways to die
