Poe has outgrown Trade

There doesn't need to be a time gate for buying/selling items on an AH.

The average player playing solo probably will only find a few Exa within a week, and be grinding to convert gear into chaos just to get more Exa and save up for key pieces to their build.

Players playing in a group/guild or botting in a group will have higher accessibility to currency drops like Exa, and that won't change unless GGG changes the quantity formula, which they shouldn't change because it gives incentive for group play. Inatead, GGG should have measures in place for banning botters so people aren't abusing the MF system.

Purchases made by an individual player will be largely gated by supply/demand for items and the amount of currency they have from playing the game their way. This is already the case with the current system, and it won't change with an AH.

Instant access to the items doesn't trivialize gameplay any more than it is already "trivialized" when supply/demand and availability of currency already gate how often purchases occur.

If there's a gate for anything, it could be the number of items listed by each player. Maybe 10 items listed on the AH per premium tab. This way, even lesser uniques will sell for a bit more than 1-2 alch each as players would want to prioritize selling the more valuable items they have obtained. IMO this still isn't necessary, but if I had to choose to gate anything, this would be where I would implement one.

...it was quotes. from the forum. lolz!
I hate this game's trading. There is, however, what I imagine would be a pretty simple to implement in-game system. Simply put a trade board in town that allows players to post links of their stash into a "Sell" tab. This post would also track their location and idle time. Players can then filter search for Sell tabs that may match what you post. They open it up, they see what you have, they decide if they want it, and clicking it automatically whispers you. Included in each tab will also be a location of the tab's owner and if they've been idle for longer than 1 minute. Also, logging out, even for a d/c, automatically clears your Sell post.

Here are some examples of how this would all work in practice:

You open the board and choose to Sell. This opens your stash. You choose what from your stash you want in your Sell tab. You can add a note or two to include the price or what you would like to trade for. Let's say you have Fusings, a nice divination, a high life ring, an all resist amulet, and a unique sword. You give it a title of "Fusings, Pale Court div, Life Ring, Resist Ammy, unique". You Accept and your Sell tab is posted.

Another player opens the board and chooses to Buy. They're scrolling through rather randomly and find your post. They mouse over your Fusings and see you're asking for Chaos. They click the Fusings. You automatically receive a message "XYZ would like to buy your Fusing Orb" and you're able to reply at your leisure. You discuss a price, meet up, and trade.

Another player opens the board and chooses to Buy. They specifically want Life gear, so they filter for Life and choose a minimum/maximum tier of bonus life if they desire. Your ring in your post matches their filter criteria and they find your post. They click the ring, you receive the message, your discuss price, you trade.

Another player opens the board and chooses to Buy. They really need a good unique for their build. Your sword is perfect. They find your post. Oh, but hold on, your post shows you've now been idle for 12 minutes in your hideout. They find someone who isn't AFK.

Two more players open the board and choose to Buy. They want resist gear. They both find your post. They see your amulet. They both click it. The 2nd player to click it, within a certain time frame, is automatically told, "Other Exiles are making offers on this item." The 2nd player keeps looking for gear. You don't like the first offer. You whisper the 2nd player. He already found another amulet. You keep mapping.

Another player opens the board and chooses to Buy. They want good divinations: Yours to be precise. They search and do not find your post because you logged out.

The players that want to hard enough will trade anyways with the current system. They ALREADY progress crazy fast. I'm not sure what the harm legitimately would be if a few dozen more percent of the population makes it to Shaper let alone Elder just because Trade isn't a fucking masochistic migraine and they have actually useful things to offer people that could then go towards crafting or buying the upgrades they need to get over a gear wall. Fix trade and I'll actually spend money on this game finally. I keep not doing it because I keep getting tired of dealing with gear walls I can't surpass due to a trade system I cannot tolerate.

The core-idea is something I would enjoy a lot, as well as many other people probably. I found several issues with it though (which can all be handled with adjustments) so I'll go over them:

The removal of listing:
People who go offline should just have their listing 'incative' and not deleted. Setting up the sale is a MAJOR hassle for higher quantity, this has to be taken into account.

The functionality of premium-tabs:
Premium-tabs allow the 'easy' trading right now. This is a function people have bought, they shouldn't be deprived of it.
The solution is fairly straight-forward. You only have a specific amount of 'slots' available for sale at the new system. Let's say 10 slots per premium-tab, 40 slots per quad.
This way all premium-tabs can be converted to 'normal ones' which will ALL get the ability to re-name them, change to color and sort them, something which should've been done from the get-go anyways, also it keeps players to own the same amount of bought stuff in regards to those who haven't done so.

You need to be able to create 'blanket' listings:
Much like opening a 'shop' over the third-party sited to exchange currency, this needs the ability to offer that as well.
The solution is also fairly easy here, allowing to set a minimum amount of currency you want to retain, a price for currency above that, how much the minimum-bulk you want to sell will be and so on.
Also those need to be invisible for others until they become viable at some point.

Ease of use is important here:
A folder-like structure to choose all available items from your tabs. Want to sell res-rings? Well, make a category for it and slap each separate item into them with the respective mods and price, people can browse through it a lot easier then, knowing those are all from you. This allows to get known by name as a proper trader unlike now, people will actively use your service this way over those from people who won't answer

Activity-time:
The inactivity should be captured every 5 minutes to ease the burden on the system, doing it real-time would be a major issue. Also 5 minutes isn't all that long. Listings need to be instant though, as well a de-listings for moving the respective item away from the position.

Buying items:
Allowing to set prices and mod-ranges to actively buy items for re-selling or making a shop. If trading is a corner-stone of the game.. it needs to be handled that way. People who solely want to run content should be allowed to do so with ease... while those who want to focus on trading need to be allowed so without a major headache.

A visible queue needs to be added:
If someone receives a trade-request then this needs to be visible. Often people can't answer because they're already busy with 10 other people, you need to know that this is the case.
Also this would allow to show if other people have shown interest for a specific item in particular, this helps the seller for raising the price properly as well as those who want to get it to out-bid each other openly... unless it's only viable for the one person who really wants it.
GGG balance is like getting a pizza which is burnt on the sides, raw in the middle and misses the most of the toppings.
Then upon sending it back you get a raw side, burnt middle and enough toppings to drench everything in grease.
Everything fixed but still broken.
Meanwhile in china and on consoles:
