This is ridiculous

Not when a Game like D3 is just around the corner. Most people are going to choose what they can get right now vs what they have to wait for. Keeping it closed when D3 is this close to release is a dangerous and potentially harmful choice.

I think most of the players who are eagerly awaiting D3 are going to be very disappointed with a lot of the changes from D1 and D2 to D3. And they'll shortly start looking around for an alternative. PoE is poised to be that alternative. So I think GGG is in a good position to snap up a lot of the disgruntled D3 players that miss D1 and D2 gameplay.

restricting beta access after the stress test was a dumb idea...

If we had kept access open, then it wouldn't have been a stress test - it would have been Open Beta, and the game isn't ready for that yet. We did, however, need to stress test our servers with real players. Bot testing is all well and good, but nothing beats doing it for real with actual people.

Yes, people may lose interest, spend money on other games, etc... but that's OK: Path of Exile is free to play, and when the game does go into Open Beta, all the players who have moved on will still receive an email notifying them that "Hey, remember that game you were interested in? Well, it's now open to the public and it's even better than before!" If they want to take another look, great! If not, then I doubt they would have become lifelong players anyway.

look at the desire on the part of their potential playerbase compared to their actions and it's already moving in a disturbing direction.

Sorry, I don't know what "player actions" you are talking about here that you find so disturbing.

We have a mysterious "trust us wink wink no one has spammed beta signups" with zero proof.

We have had numerous people spam signups in the hope of getting beta access. The majority of them have been caught and banned, but if you know of any others, please report them to an admin or mod and we'll check it out.

Not quite - what we actually said was "since you don't need to log-in to surf the site/forums, you can't tell if someone has been visiting the site based on their last log-in time". I don't see why we need to present "proof" of this.

some of the people I see on here have been active and engaged for MONTHS. And they are getting crapped on.

Well, it is random, after all. Remember, though, that as well as the timer granting access, friend keys are given out and many of these are distributed right here in the forum. I've seen plenty of threads where friendly folk give out keys specifically to older, active members.

In the end, it boils down to a two simple facts:
-Everyone who signs up gets a chance, regardless of whether or not they are "active". Yes, even that guy who signed up only 3 minutes ago.
-The "active" community posting in the forums is just a small minority of the overall pool of sign-ups.

Of course we do think that active forum members deserve a little bit more, so we award a 10x multiplier to the odds for anyone who has posted, ever.

Shouldn't we consider who is driving the bus before we decide if we want to ride?

I agree - which is why I follow game development studios whose works I enjoy and keep an eye on their latest games. And I understand the rationale behind not wanting to invest your time and energy in an online-only game if you think it will fail and have the servers switched off. But this is hardly unique to us - there are plenty of other games with this in-built risk. All I can say is that we here at GGG have faith in our game, as do our investors, and we are doing our best to make Path of Exile an awesome game for everyone.

they lost some players. Now, if the game continues to be great then it certianly won't matter a lot. But you ask the people running HoN, POTBS, DAOC, etc if they would like 45K more active and interested members in their player community.

Maybe we did lose some players after stress test, though certainly wasn't anywhere near 45000. However, we also gained many sign-ups over the open weekend, in fact significantly more than most other publicity events.

Also, everyone in the stress test was fully aware going in that this was a limited-time-only deal, and that access would be revoked afterwards. I don't really see why this would be enough to make you lose interest in the game when you were told it was going to happen.

If a car show had a new awesome vehicle present and only let people look at it for an hour and then threw a tarp over it for the rest of the day would that make sense? Crowd of people all around. But they are asked to hang out for 5 hours and they will let them see the car again if they just...wait. Why?

I think a better analogy is that we've been letting everyone see the car for months, and now as a special bonus we let people drive the car for 1 hour only. And then we give each of them one of the cars for free when we've finished polishing it.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the game during the weekend. I can promise it will be even better by the time we do go public with the beta.

I agree that there is potential for this. That's why I refer to its as a risky gamble. Only time will tell when D3 releases.
Any official word on when donation option goes live Rhys ?
Thanks for the well written response Rhys.

You'd have to ask Chris. I'm not actually sure how many details about it have officially been made public...

What if they are not competing? I think a lot of you are constantly bringing up diablo 3 are failing to understand that this is their Dream. This is not a corporation. It is two guys that started in a garage.

No offence mate - but go and ask the developers if they want to make money off this game. I would think they would want to do that - to repay those friends who put up the $$ to begin with and extra $$ as well. I can almost guarantee you that they would love to make loads of money off this. If they completed their dream game but made a massive loss or had noone play the game do you think they would be happy about it?

Whether you like to admit it or not, they are in direct competition with D3.

None taken. My point is that you can not deny quality. Some people follow and others know what they want . Quality over Quantity. Support the underdog. Let the masses eat fast food when you garden and cook your meals. It takes all kinds and when you produce something like PoE. You don't have to worry about the corporations. Quality gains Loyalty. I am the type of guy since 16 and now being 34 has only driven dodge trucks with a cummins diesel. They have never failed. So why switch every time something new comes out? I am north american so I try to only buy north american products. Got me little buddy? Some of us are just too damn cool to care what others are doing because they are really just wanting to be like us. You have to believe in the force. It is strong in Chris.
