Winter Orb is probably one of the dumbest skills in PoE history
" +1 we've been experiencing "consolization" since blade flurry IMO. Git R Dun!

37% of all plyers at lvl 99 to 100 plays Winter Orb on Poe.ninja.
A sign that it may be unbalanced? https://poe.ninja/challenge/builds?minlevel=99 Kitty's Guide On Post Formatting - view-thread/1913874

Winter Orb is weird skill.
I loved Blade vortex forever, played it with 50 stacks, with 20 stacks, with 10 stacks, but now GGG delivered better skill than BV. Plays the same but better. By itself it's not that flashy, but combined with Heralds, it's all the explosions you ever wanted. Yes, it is dumb, you don't have to think when it auto targets everything that can be destroyed across the whole screen. I wanted my BV to shoot Arcs, so I played BV Mjolner. Now no need, Winter Orb is here! I represent only myself, my own thought and believes. I am individual, not a representative of the community.
I am not speaking on behalf of someone else and I don't get offended by things that have nothing to do with me. 3.13 was the golden age. |

WOrb has to be balanced as a clear skill, if its possible to boss with it it just becomes too good in general due the nature of the skill. RF was definitely balanced as a clear skill you could use tips and tricks to get it up there in single target but it never really approached the realm of "good" damage.
I found it a bit ironic when they released Worb actually that after 10 leagues (hypebole) of trying to nerf BV in a row they just released a full screen version of the same mechanic. Great skill, but a dangerous skill to add to your balance stable. |

i dont understand the meaning of the word "dumb" when its applied to a skill.
if you want to say that its easy to use - alright, but i dont see the problem in "easy to use" part because, you know, i played spectres summoners and zombiemancers builds where you just hold RMB button for shield charge and your minions kill everything, so thats even more "easy to use" because you dont even need to channel and charge anything. its all pretty much subjective. another part is the effectiveness part. the damage of the spell is quite ridiculus without any deep investment and, from the balance side of things, imo it should be nerfed hard, no doubt about it. btw, there are no real complicated gameplay builds in poe. you dont need to manage cooldowns or group monsters or manage defensive skills. try to play jade harvester witch doctor in d3 you will understand what i am talking about. you need to group mobs, apply haunt to them, apply locust swarm, fear if necessary, harvest them, watch on defensive CDs like spirit walk and horrify, watch on harvest stacks, now thats what you can call a complicated gameplay. in poe, i played raider rain of arrows - walk - RMB - everything dies. i played cyclone jugg - leap - RMB - everything dies. summoners - press RMB - minions kill everything. i played trapper - walk - RMB - everything dies. cant see any difference between this or winter orb or any other gameplay in this game and actually this is a weak side of poe. dead game bring back 3.13 Last edited by Tainted_Fate#2799 on Apr 26, 2019, 12:45:52 AM

" You are entirely right. I would just nuance that there IS room for more complicated gameplay in PoE: -: Mines (apart from Spark, Arc and other "screen wide" effects) -: Big Traps (tremor, lightning spire, flamethrower) -: Unleash (same exceptions as mines) -: Frostball & Cie (this one being an exception in how "meta viable" it is) -: The corpse skills (VD being miles ahead of the others sadly) These are "more complex" (and IMO more fun) way to play, but the rewards are not there in terms of damage, speed and versatility. Which is fine for speed but kind of shame for everything else. |

" When it fulfils too many criteria simultaneously a skill becomes dumb, not dumb because its bad dumb if you don't choose to play it ;p like in your end summary of RoA everything dies in one hit etc etc you are right most skills boil down to that but WOrb actually clears multiple screens per RMB (similar to tricked out RoA with mirage archer attached) Like building a silly strawman for a second here if earthquake covered multiple screens and did 1000% attack damage some people would think woohoo this is amazing! But it'd get called a dumb skill for the same reasons. |

" Current mechanic makes Worb to be OP skill and too much simple skill at the same moment 1) Its simple to use(you dont need frenzy charges as flicker strike for example) 2)its have tags "Cold, Spell, Channelling, AoE, Duration, Projectile" -> Its just everything in the world and getting scaling from everything in tree/items and have to be re-balanced. Its have so much tags -> 99% of boss killers casters use it in shaper gloves like another 6link boss killer setup. even if you are not boss killer -> for example you playing divine ire trickster with lightning to cold conversion -> you can use 6l winther orb setup in gloves for clearspeed mapping and divinre ire/stormburst/whatever in main body for bosses.Too much simple and too much rewarded. Flicker strike have much less taga, more risks and need more conditions for working (like frenzy charge generation) - more balanced as result It looks unfair to compare with other skills that for so low investment casters have so good clearspeed skill. " THought and skill in PoE come when designing builds or succeeding at the higher end content despite not using a min/max meta build. However i do agree that the average player doesn't care about either of those and thus I can see why some people might call the game play mindless. |
