No physics engine?

Meh I'd like to see the game get a little more polished before working on something like this.

down the road maybe after release.

It wouldn't be that hard to add a sudimentry one in, and since most of the people here are not programmers, dont listen to them when it comes to how much time it would take or what it would have to be a trade off for.

The game goes into closed beta and will stay that way until they are happy to go open, and then will stay THAT way until they feel like they can charge people for items. During this time, lots of stuff is going to be updated and outright gutted.

But adding even a randomized death animation would be too hard, apparently...

I'm pretty spoiled due to the fact that I played Sacred 2 with PhysiX on, but I'm able to bear the lack of physics in this game.

Finish the game first content-wise and then add additional stuff later into this game.

Sacred 2 did the same fyi.

They could make it a paid for thing, after the official launch.

The game looks great so far. I think ill like it as it is.

However a physics engine shouldn't be ruled out. It must be considered later on. It adds too much to games. TQ had a physics engine and was great so it does work with these types. The amount of laughter created was worth it alone. There's nothing quite like your impact on an enemy being expressed so vividly. Thrashing a corpse or something living across a multitude of occasions and terrain brings an unequivocal warmth to my heart. And all the games that have achieved this I will never forget and remain some of my best gaming experiences. Titan Quest, Company of Heroes, Unreal Tournament etc.

A physics engine stops repetitive actions being so dull. This is by adding an interesting reaction to the grinding. And lets face it these games are called grinders for a reason. It is what we do in them. It is what we love about them. A physics engine stops the grinding from being as stagnant. This aspect will add playing time to your sessions by braking up the usual animations with unusual outcomes.

It also brings another level of interest and awe into a game. Whenever you try to kill a new enemy, try a new skill or try a new weapon a new possibility lies in wait. Its because an element of randomness is added when physics engines are introduced. Enemies go flying, jumping jacking, flipping, flailing, spinning, spiralling, and star fishing. And all can happen off a cliff, while on fire, into others, while dead, while living and into structures.
The prospects are endless.

Physics are a part of game play. To completely ignore them would be a failure.
To rush a poorly implemented physics engine into a game would be a even bigger failure. GGG have done very well. They have nailed exactly what this genre of game should be about while everyone else has strayed away.
But at some point physics must be implemented to push this game further.
It will make a higher ilk of game.
I hadn't even noticed there wasn't one present.

In a game like Mount and Blade - where physics is key to gameplay (the damage you deal with your lance is dependent on the angle of your attack, the speed both horse riders are running at, and then the speed of both horses after they charge each other has to be calculated somehow...), I can see the need to put a physics engine in.

In a game like Dwarf Fortress, where the entire world is just a physics simulator... it's a key gameplay feature. And the guy making DF has a PHD in mathematics, so I'd say it's safe to say, while PoE must have some talented programmers on their team, probably not someone who'd normally cost 350k a year to hire, just so a rudimentry physics enginer can be painfully constructed from scratch.

In a game like PoE? It's just for eyecandy. And while some players might laugh at the fact a bunch of skeletons fly back when you hit them... I've never found physics that amusing, in that sense, only in manipulating it to see interesting outcomes. Physics could enhance PoE's skill system, if it were a feasible cost, but at this stage in development... and with such a small, indie team, the risk associated with the cost is a bit great. It's unlikely to make the game seem any more polished than it already is or will be at launch and I doubt few people will even realize it.

dont know about physics in this. it will most likely add more load to the game than needed for a game like this.
