No physics engine?

You cannot expect too much from a 15 people team and free to play game. Help this game to be a huge success and then everything is possible in the future.

GGG have done really excellent job and physics effects aren't really a must at this stage and it would only delay the game for the next 2 years or so.

You can't just slap those in. You have to pay for the rights to those engines. It's highly unlikely that such a small developer would be willing to spend what limited money they have on something so trivial.

I apologize if this has been brought up before, but I ran a search and came up with nothing.

I've been watching gameplay videos from PoE, and have noticed that there appears to be no physics engine in the game. All the enemies appear to have the same stock death animation.

Is this intentional, or only placeholder until a physics engine is implemented into the game?

I ask because physics engines obviously add a lot to the expression of a character in an aRPG. Every skill and its impact should have its own effect on enemies. There's nothing quite like seeing an explosive attack scattering corpses in all directions - the weight and power it adds to the character is sublime.

Obviously when you're slaughtering thousands of identical monster archetypes, it gets quite boring looking at the same death animation play itself out over the years, regardless of what skill is being used.

Is it just a matter of time until a physics engine and ragdoll-style deaths are implemented into PoE, or is that something the devs aren't entertaining?

It's a free game, guy. Don't expect miracles, just fun until Diablo III comes out (for me... for now)
Moderators coming soon. Genius publicity ideas have sucked me into this game.
Implementing a physics engine isn't difficult.
Modifying everything you've already programmed in order to use said physics engine - different story entirely.
So, yeah.
The Mount & Blade developers were a very small team, and they retroactively integrated a rudimentary physics system well after the core of their game was programmed. I can't imagine the feat is unthinkable.

I understand that there would be other priorities higher on the list, but it feels like a glaring omission to code a modern graphics engine without some form of physics component in 2011.

Also, I would personally prefer PoE not be a free title. I would gladly purchase it, as well as pay for vanity items afterward.
I have watched a few 1080p gameplay footage on PoE and I must say I'm very happy the way it is physics or not.

It really has no effect on me.
It's pretty nice to hear that they dont have one, as I'd imagine it'd stretch the team a bit thin and effect gameplay, if that's what they spent some time to develop.
Does it really matter if a skeleton falls back or to the side when you shoot a arrow throw it?
Yes it was a nice feature in TQ.. but i dont think it has that big impact.
Maybe in POE ver 2.0

The licensing fee for engines like Havok are well into the tens and hundreds of thousands (licensing fees vary, as I understand it, as the providers are willing to negotiate based on what you can afford). Unity is something like 25% of your revenue after the first 5k. For a game designed to survive off of micro transactions, this seems like a really large amount of money to dump into third party tools.

There is a reason the M&B developers made their own.

As far as Physics goes - given the large amount of animation work already in game, it seems unlikely that the devs will swap in a physics engine. Furthermore, the game is at a stage where they are still trying to get the mechanics, skills and balance right and have a huge slew of things to add. I'd think that once they feel the game mechanics are working, then they might think about a physics engine.

Attempting to partake in such witchery would anger the gods. Our earth is flat and thats the way we like it.

LOL This about summarizes the response's so far, I feel.

I understand if for budget and time reasons they dont have one, but I wouldnt mind one im the future. This IS an action game after all...
