How to address the growing problem of power creep of items, and builds in PoE.

D2 had a very thriving community about ladders actually, far more then PoE has, this changed with D3 though as the 'hardcore' community left for... well... PoE mostly.
Also nothing is ever 'lost' in PoE, everything is transferred to standard, where it stays and everyone has access to it. That's the major upside and why many players who usually like standard only even take a look at the league. To play the new mechanic, get the new items presented there and add them then to their builds in standard. Also because farming up mirrors in league is a lot easier then in standard, this can easily be seen with Empyrian for instance, usually he and his group got around 10-20 mirrors after the first month of league, if not more.

While most of us don't give a s**t about ladders or economy in leagues, a big enough chunk of the player-base does to be relevant, so it has to be taken into account as well when discussing changes which will affect that.

I get that its there and some people care. You even get MTX and stuff for doing league stuff. But nobody I know who casually plays poe is like yeah man, gotta be first on the latter, gotta do this and that and maximize the profit and economy in the first week etc etc.

Most people I know are like "I want to try a melee build using shield charge, that could be neat. :D" They romp through the ten acts, maybe do the latest league mechanic, map for a bit and that's their thing.

I mean, the Lore of PoE is higher up on the game page than leagues and latter. What does that say about the supposed priority of competition? Competition is at the bottom of the page. Its a footnote. I still wouldn't say PoE is a "competitive game" as if it was Starcraft 2 or Fortnite. Even PvP is widely regarded and garbage in this game. And nobody gets paid money for being the first to 100 on a new league. GGG has put more work in the Lore and Storytelling of PoE than they ever have in any competitive aspect of PoE.

That was a synonym for 'priority' or 'rank of importance' in the case of his post, not literal wording.

Also you link of the item: That's a link created via the API of PoE, it generates the item via that individual link. Many online-games feature such a thing, as an example 'Eve Online'. Also you can re-create the same on your personal website using this API. Is that self-made website part of the game then too? The game is one thing: the client, not more, not less.
Also, you can download the game via Steam, never visiting the website directly besides taking care of your account... probably. I don't actually know if Steam doesn't do that automatically as well for you.

But back to topic and useful things: Yeah, the balance of the game is very fickle, and it will take a lot of effort to manage. I can only imagine how many lines of programming have to be adjusted to implement a single small new mechanic which interacts with the others. It has to be massive. Hence why I'm saying that those things probably won't be coming before 4.0.0.. In 3.7.0 we'll have Melee balance, then at 3.8.0 they'll hopefully address summoners, giving them a way to actually see the strength of their summons instead of having to either rely on mathing it out personally or using third-party programms (Path of Building) to do that job for them.
So, my guess would be to see those changes earliest around 3.9.0, at which point they might just postpone it to 4.0.0 to do a better job instead of rushing it as they have to do with league-content.

Also yes, I definitely have to agree, the majority of people either wants to test out skills, reach a specific point in the game, or manage to get a HC character through the game. Focusing on the ladder is fairly rare, that's specifically for racers, and those are a minority. Well... a minority which offers the most exciting content for streams though as they progress fast and showcase a good level of skill since it's mandatory.
GGG balance is like getting a pizza which is burnt on the sides, raw in the middle and misses the most of the toppings.
Then upon sending it back you get a raw side, burnt middle and enough toppings to drench everything in grease.
Everything fixed but still broken.
...it accesses my stash, from the game.

it's part of the game.

Anyway, let's remember the game was truly stupid a few years ago balance wise. I remember when immortality was truly at hand.

...what do you mean "was?"

At least you can die now no matter who you are. IC plus high max resists were insane. Now we just have horrible imbalances instead of grossly horrible imbalances.

600 ES helmet isn't grossly horrible enough ?
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.
max block, + res (easy with tree and gear), high es... as immortal as ever, really.

we just don't know because we don't have 1000 hours of poe experience.

My suggestion would be for a re-balance of the mods on items, raising several up many levels, as well as allowing ilvl 86 bases to roll mods up to lvl 100, with the strongest 1 or 2 gated behind that end-game goal.
Also this would make progression more sensible again, not allowing to simply skip tons of content.

I like your idea of re-balancing the items. I would say that the issue is not the mods themselves, but more so how easy it is to aquire the bases with amazing mod pools.

I think the fix to help with power creep, is to make ilvl86 bases, including shaped/elder bases to become of mirror tier rarity. There should be barely any in the game.
